My Uniden DXAI4588 phones just started doing this, and I don't know why.

They're about a year old and have worked fine up until now.

When a call comes in, pressing "Talk" (whether the phone is on or off its base) yields this, "Connecting," but that's it.

It will NOT answer. If I wait until AFTER the answering machine has picked up, THEN I can answer by pressing the "Talk" button.

I don't see anything in the owner's manual, like a setting I can change.

Have they ever worked before or are these new from the box?

Okay, this solved it for me, so maybe it'll help others.

Basically, you just need to re-register the phones by placing each one on the base unit and leaving it there for at least five seconds after the charge/in use LED light stops flashing.

According to the manual, it's necessary to re-register each phone after a power failure or if the batteries get very low or die. If you're experiencing the "connecting..." problem, this will probably fix it!

You have your answering machine set up to beep when you get a new message. Go through the menu for setting up the answering machine and turn that feature off.

Sounds like the battery is dead. The base is recognizing the phone, just not able to charge the bad battery.

I always tell people NOT to buy new batteries to try and fix their cordless phone. It seems to rarely solve the problem and you are usually better off just spending the money on a new phone. Unfortunately 5 years is a long time for cordless phones these days. There are so many brands, and so many thousands of models, it's impossible to keep track of them all.
