With the keyboard upplugged from the PC.
You can use a flat tip screw driver & gently pry the s key up working your way around the key untill it pops off. clean the surface with a lightly soapy (not dripping) rag. Pop the key back on after it's dry. If the s key still does not function I suggest you get another keyboard. You can also try this. Click the link.

Sorry I missed the part ( You have a Notebook ). The virtual keyboard will work for you but you'll have to have it serviced. ( the notebooks keyboards circuit layout will have to be replaced. Suggest you use a pro to replace the part.

How to troubleshoot keyboard issues?

Wireless Keyboard:
If only some of the keys don't work skip to the section Some Keys Don't Work below.
  1. Resynchronize the keyboard. Press the connect button on the keyboard for 5 seconds. Then press the connect button on the receiver for 5 seconds
  2. Change the batteries.
  3. Try reseating the receiver if possible.
  4. Try positioning the keyboard closer to the receiver.
  5. Skip to the section Generic Troubleshooting below.
Some Keys Don't Work:
  1. Check if any of the num lock key, shift lock key, etc are causing the issue. This is especially prevalent on laptops which don't have a distinct numeric keypad.
  2. If it's only the multimedia or hotkeys that don't work then try installing the specialized multimedia keyboard software that came with the system/keyboard.
  3. Try reseating the keyboard and rebooting.
  4. Go into Accessibility Options in Control Panel and check that Sticky Keys, Filter Keys and Toggle Keys are all switched off.
  5. Check if the problem occurs in the BIOS. A good screen to test with is the create BIOS password screen if the keys don't work here then a new keyboard is in order.
  6. Continue on to Generic Troubleshooting.
No Keys Work:
  1. Try reseating the keyboard and rebooting.
  2. Try power draining the system. This can be particularly effecitive with a laptop.
  3. If this is USB try a different port.
  4. Try entering BIOS - if you cannot get into BIOS then the keyboard probably needs to be replaced.
  5. Go on to Generic Troubleshooting below.
Generic Troubleshooting:
  1. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver and reboot
  2. Try system restore back to before the problem occurred
  3. Check for malware or 3rd party software that may be interfering with the function of the keyboard.

Try this.

Press the Start key + R.

type osk in that box and hit enter

On this keyboard, try toggling numlock scrolllock and capslock a few times. does it help?

I think your numlock might be stuck on and your keyboard "num lock" key isnt working

Replace the keyboard -- nobody "fixes" laptop keyboards, due to the lower cost of replacing it.

New netbook. Attempting set-up. Keyboard keys don't work. Nothing gets typed in. Just hear a click.

Disable the Numlock key and check if the same issue persists. You can reinstall the Keyboard Driver to resolve the issue. Uninstall the Keyboard Driver from the Device Manager and restart the Computer. The Computer will reinstall the Keyboard Driver when you restart the Computer automatically.

Keyboard

Hi, "I suggest that you try reconfiguring the way the Keyboard functions. Click on the Start button, in the [Start Search Window] type: keyboards; the "Keyboard" will appear in the shortcut menu. Next, select to open, make all the changes to your specifications, "Apply and OK" all changes. After you are finished, Restart the Computer. If this helped; let me know by giving a "helpful rating," thanks.

Some keys on my laptop dont work

Trying a desktop keyboard is useful for determining if it is a keyboard problem or a software problem. This usualy happens if some liquid has gotten into the keyboard, but you said thats not possible. Try to boot into bios, the first screen that pops up when you boot, on a toshiba it is usually pressing F1 or Del. then if your Arrow keys don't work there, you need a new keyboard.

KEYBORD PROBLEM

Hello,

If your keyboard is not working right there are two suggestions I have to see if the problem is with the keyboard or the computer. If you have access to another computer I would plug it into that and try it out. If it works fine there then you know the issue is with the computer. If it doesn't then you may want to talk to the manufacturer if the computer is under warranty to get a free keyboard. If it's not under warranty you may want to pick up a new key board. They are only about $10 - $15.

If the keyboard seems to work on another computer it is likely an issue with the computer. One possibility could be the keyboard drivers. This is more common on keyboards with buttons alone the top to turn the computer on/off and open Internet Explorer. If this is the case see if you still have the drivers disk that came with the computer and use that to reinstall the drivers for your keyboard.

If you reinstall the drivers and it is still happening the best way to find what is causing the issue is to keep an eye on what you are doing when the keyboard stops working. Is it in Internet Explorer? Is it in Notepad? Is it in Windows Mail? And if it stops working in one of these programs does it work in other programs and just not that specific program? This would indicate that the issue is with that program and not with the keyboard or Windows.

I hope this helps!

Key board

As the issue is not clear whether the keyboard doesnot type the keys that are pressed, I recommend you to try typing in different applications like Microsoft Word, Notepad etc so that if the same thing happens with all the applications, the issue should be with the Keyboard.

However, before coming to a conclusion, I recommend you to try connecting a USB Keyboard to the Notebook and see if the same thing happens with it an all applications like Word, Notepad etc.

If the same thing happens with the USB Keyboard, the issue can be with the Keyboard Drivers which will be common for both the Notebook Keyboard and any external keyboard connected.

You can try to reinstall the Keyboard Drives in the Notebook from the Device Manger :

Open Device Manager by following the instructions....

Press the Start Menu and R key to get the Run command prompt.

In this, type devmgmt.msc and click on OK.

This will give us the Device Manager window.

In this, click on the + mark next to Keyboards which will display two entries.

Right click on Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard and select Uninstall and click on OK in any window that appears.

This will uninstall the Keyboard Drivers from the Notebook.

Restart the Notebook once the process is completed.

The Keyboard Drivers will be reinstalled and the issue should be fixed if it is with the Drivers.

If the issue is with the Keyboard Hardware, the issue remains and you may have to get the Keyboard replaced by contacting HP if it is under warranty.

If the Notebook is out of warranty, get the Keyboard replaced through any HP Authorized Service Provider like Best Buy, Comp USA or Radio Shack stores in US.
