My Pentax IQZoom 115v overexposes every shot for that lovely "washed out" look we all hate. I only use Kodak slide film ASA 100. I've used IQZoom 900 cameras for decades with excellent results....

First, here's a link to a free download of your camera's manual in case you've lost yours.

On page 16 of the manual, it states that in addition to using DX film of ISO 100 to ISO 400:

1) Color negative film is recommended.
2) Non-DX film cannot be used - but then says if it is used, set the film to ISO 100.
3) ISO 400 film is recommended.

Page 25 and forward detail exposure Modes. This should be your next area of interest in the manual. If you are unable to to solve the problem at this point, there may be an issue with the aperture of the lens being stuck open - or the shutter remaining open for too long. Either way, it will probably need to be serviced professionally to get it working again. You might consider replacing this camera as repair costs may exceed the value of the camera.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply - thank you.

When I turn the knob on the camera to be able to take another picture, the number still stays at zero. What's wrong with my camera?

There are a couple of possibilities that I can think of:

First, film must be loaded into the camera for the picture counter to increment.

Second, if you've loaded film, but the counter still does not change, it is possible the film is not advancing (the film release button/knob/lever that you use to rewind the film may be activated) or the film has slipped off the sprockets on the take-up spool.

If you can stand to lose the photos you may have already taken, just open the back of the camera and make sure the film is advancing when you take a photo.

If you can't possibly lose the photos, rewind the film and take the film to be developed. Try to find a local developer that only charges for the photos that "came out"... This can save a lot of money if only a few frames develop properly (or if none come out!)

Best film for Vivitar V3800N 35mm camera

With modern film technology, use whichever one you wish, they're all good.

The differences between brands (even supermarket/drugstore own brands) is largely one of personal preference: some provide more vivid colours which suit certain subjects but to some they look unrealistic, others have a more subdued colour but to some they look too dull. In practice you probably won't notice the difference as the final colours depend upon which company processes the film and prints the photos, the machines they use, the brand of photo paper, the individual human operator, and whether for economy reasons they've stretched the life of their processing chemicals longer than recommended.

What make a bigger difference is film speed. Slower speeds (lower ISO numbers) give finer image resolution but need longer exposures, faster films (higher ISO) allow faster shutter speeds or smaller aperture settings (or both) but give a less detailed image. But it's true that a modern ISO400 film isn't much worse than the ISO100 films were back in the early 1970's. Given the modest maximum aperture of the lens you have I'd recommend that you avoid using IS0100 film unless you know that you'll be shooting the roll in bright lighting conditions. ISO200 is your best all-rounder unless you have longer telephoto lenses in which case you'll find that ISO400 is a better choice.

You can also save a lot of money if you buy out of date film: if it's been stored in cool conditions it's usually good for at least a year after the expiry date, but if you wish to use slide (a.k.a. transparency) film then it's best to reduce that to no more than six months.

The biggest difference to image quality is you and your understanding of how to use the camera, and the single best investment you'll make will be a tripod and shutter release cable: used together you can eliminate camera shake and ensure that your photos are as sharp as possible. Even a small bean bag can be used instead of a tripod if there's something to rest it on.

In short, you'll only find "your" best film by using lots of it, regularly, and experimenting to find a good photo lab and then sticking with it for as long as they do a good job.

Good luck, and I hope that I've helped you. Please feel free to ask me for further clarification if anything I've written is not clear enough, and when you're happy with my answer please take a moment to rate my reply.

I release the small black button on the back of the camera and tried to rewind it but iy won't do it. I am afraid to loose my pictures. Please help me.

On the bottom you have the Film rewind button. On the top you have the film rewind knob with crank . Here are the instructions on how to rewind the film. You can tell you have reached the end of the film by the frame counter and the film advance lever. Either the film advance lever will not turn at all or it will not turn all the way. First press in the rewind button, you may immediately let go of it, its on the bottom as shown before. Then turn the rewind crank clock wise until the frame counter, which counts backwards as you rewind, reaches "S" then open the back cover, remove the film, place it back in its canister and have it developed as soon as possible.

Shooting out film

Unfortunately you have a broken camera and it's not really fixable. There are plenty of free/cheap examples on FreeCycle and in thrift/charity shops but as you've discovered to your cost there's only one rather expensive way to find out whether they work...

Photo settings display

I recommend the Qimage software. Although it is really designed to help print images, it also has excellent computer screen viewing of images, as well as some image editing capabilites, and will show the F-stop and aperture, and other camera setting values for each picture just by holding the mouse pointer over the thumbnail image. The $30 I spent for this software several years ago (all updates are free) is the best money I have spent on photo software. Mike Chaney (the guy who wrote and updates the software) is always improving it and is responsive to user comments and suggestions. Visit the web site (http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/imaging/index.html#news) and download the free demo - I think that you will like it.
