If it is a network drive. I believe it must have an IP address.

The best way to start troubleshotting is to know the ip address

Then you can ping the Ip address to know if your computer can see the drive.

If the ping time out...then the drive is not on the network.

If the ping reply then it is on the network. so you'll need to look at the share.

well, if you can Ping it, then the firewall is not likely going to be blocking it. Regardless, which product do you have ? The Silver Stone 2-drive NAS ? If yes, you should be using the FNS Assistant (FNSA)
The Freecom Network Storage Assistant helps you to locate your Freecom SilverStore 2-Drive NAS in your network. It can also be used to:
- quickly open the SilverStore 2-Drive NAS configuration website.
- configure the basic settings.
- mount shared network folders.
a) Start the FNS Assistant and select the device from the device list.
b) Go to "Web interface of your Freecom Network Storage device" for initial configuration

hope that helps.

We have 2 Acer laptops. The screen on one is broken. Can we coonect the two by a USB cable so that we can transferr files from the broken laptop to the good one?

The bset way to do this is to have a switch or router, and connect them by network and transfer all your needed files.
chiefmecha.jpg
the only problem you might have is, file sharing, meaning if the files you want is readily shared, but there is a way to do that. First try to borrow a montor or LCD screen and connect to the broken-screened LAptop, and try to share the files to network.
One more easier way to fo this is to install a monitor on the broken-screend one, install a USB external hard drive on it and then copy all the files you want. After copying thet, install the USB Hard drive on your perfectly working laptop and copy the files. This procedure is more easier than what you have in mind, cheaper too, because you can always just borrow a USB Hard drive or flash drive. Even a small capacity flash drive would do, it just takes more times of plug and unplug because of the capacity issue.
Hope this helps and Thank You for using Fixya.

Hi I have just installed a brand new Belkin wireless router and it works great with all computers and laptops in the family (including Apple products) apart from my daughters laptop...she has a toshiba...

Check the main computer you set up the network router with...you may need to go to the network status and tasks in control panel...click on this...then you will see a map of all the network devices connected...find the belkin router and click on it...in this window there should be a tab called wireless properties..click this...the wireless properties first page should have the wireless SSID name listed here...and if you click the security tab then the security type and network key are displayed here..You need to write down the SSID, security type, and network key and make sdure the toshiba laptop setting for the wireless network are exactly the same. There may be a link on the first page of the wireless securities saying copy to usb drive..you can use this to copy all network settings to and then transfer these settings in to the toshiba by using the network setup wizard.

I have bought my son an Acer Aspire One netbook and have set it up this morning. All is well with the one exception that the system cannot connect to the internet via my wireless router. The netbook does...

You may have to set up the network on the Notebook manually...You can go to the network setup wizard and choose to get the settings for the network and put them on a usb drive. Goto control panel and select View network status and tasks from the main computer running on your network(or the one you used to setup your wireless). You should see a page with all the network devices that are running on the system. Under "view your active networks" you should see the router's name. Click on the router and the wireless connection status page should come up. Here you will want to find the wireless "properties " tab and click it. There in the connections tab there should be a link at the bottom saying" copy this network profile to a usb drive"...select this option and the computer will prompt you to insert a usb drive and copy net settings...then you take the usb out and put it into the Acer A1 and under network setup copy files from usb drive onto Acer A1..the network setup wizard will guide you through the steps..any q'S email at jcameo7270@yahoo.com

I have an i mac and windows 7 laptop.......the laptop is brand new and i want to transfer all my music and movies from my mac......can this be done and if so how???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

> transfer from Mac to PC ... how ?

Several ways:

* use Ethernet cables to connect the network-port on each computer to a "router" (one of those boxes that "splits" your Internet signal, and might provide "wireless" access inside your home), and then enable "file-sharing" on both computers.
Then, the computers can "talk" to each other, via the router.

* write all the files to an external storage device, e.g., USB memory-stick or Western Digital Passport device. Move the device to the other computer, and copy from the device onto the computer.

* "burn" all the files to CD-recordable or DVD-recordable disks.
Move the disks to the new computer.

I have a lot of photos on the external Freecom hard drive. I've changed laptops, and have lost the CD, and anyway, can't remember the password! help!

This should not be to hard to recover.

Unless reformatted it is likely that only file indexing problem is the issue.

External hard drives are for copies.
Never allow a to ever be your only copy.

FREE FILE RECOVERY PROGRAM GOTO:
www.recuva.com
Just choose a drive,
Your Hard drive.
Then click the Scan button.

Hope this Tip helps you.

How to instal a cd rom/cd rw

Hello,

The easiest thing to do is transfer the setup files for you CD-R/RW onto flash media and install from that media inserted into your EEE notebook or copy it off and onto a folder on your EEE's hard drive.

If you do not have any flash media you will need to get some as this is the way to move files on and off your subNotebook until you're on your home network and can access shared folders or drives.

If you have a SSD, then I'd install from the flash media and save the space on your SSD.

After you have installed the external drive, attach the USB cable, or when prompted to do so. Then allow Windows to add new hardware and point it to your installation files on the hard drive or flash media.

This is a basic technique with subNotebooks that don't have a DVD/CD bay or floppy for that mattter.

The trend now is to establish flash media as the defacto storage media. When I was at Office Depot the other day, they had a fish bowl at the checkout filled with 1GB SD cards for pretty cheap, under 10 bucks. I have three 2GB cards I use just for this purpose.

Once you have your subNotebook on the Internet, you can add external devices and let Windows search the Internet for installation files. MS has a huge repository of installation files it can access too, those can be slightly out of date depending on just how new your external device is.

If you get stuck let me know with the details of what failed you and how. I'll help you get through this so you can get onto your wireless router. Then it will be a cake walk to access the external drive. Or you can enable Sharing on your PC's DVD drive and add that in your Network Places. Once you've done this you can access and install the media or any program from your Shared PC DVD drive.

Any questions? just use the comment box below to ask away.

Worldvet

Is it formatted as FAT32? If so, it doesn't support files larger than 4GB.

Backup the files you have on it, then reformat as NTFS.
