GE # JE 1860WH AH900849 not heating

I have had this microwave for 2 1/2 years. It turns on and sounds normal. In 19 to 15 seconds it sounds louder and it is not heating. What do you think it may be. Can I fix it myself ?
Thank you,

Hi Kathrine,

It sounds like the magnetron may be bad, if this is the case it may still be under warranty. Check to see if it's in warranty if it is contact GE or the store you bought it from. If it is I would not recommend you repair yourself (very dangerous voltage, and a very expensive part)

My microwave runs and sonds normal but doesnt heat anyhing

First: Check the high voltage fuse (this fuse connects between the
high voltage capacitor to one pin of the magnetron( careful this capacitor must be discharged)), replace fuse if it blown.
Second: If this fuse blown again, the magnetron must be replaced
Note: These answers only apply when the microwave are working with normal sound but NO heat, If strange sound occurred that means could be something else faulty!
Good luck

We have a 10 year old GE microwave model JE 1860 and it turns on bit is loud and doesn't 't heat up wondering if it is worth repair or should we just replace it??

Carol, where I live the parts for what could be the possible problem and the labor cost for the repair would probably equal about 2/3 to 3/4 of the cost of a new microwave. Most dealers that I deal with in my area tell me that the average life span of a microwave is 5-7 years. Considering the age and what it might cost it might be better to invest in a new microwave. Hope this helps.

Turns on but not heating food sounds a bit louder

Hi, this is common in most microwaves. this abnormal noise is coming from a faulty Magnetron. this device is responsible for the heating process and, it is damaged and not heating at all at this point.Simply replace the Magnetron and, this unit will start to heat once more.

I have a microwave built in 1998. It is a GE Model # JES1244WA001 and it won't heat. When we turn it on, it acts normal, but it just won't heat. I unplugged it and plugged it back in but that didn't help....

hello, let me see if i can assist you.

When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

Since your microwave is 11 years old, most technicians would recommend that you trash it and buy a new one. The repair will cost more than a new microwave.

Have GE JVM2050 over the range microwave, which stopped heating food and water since this morning. All other functions including light, key pad, clock, turntable work normal. The magnetron sound also

if everything works except the heating, it is most likely the mag tube is on its way out.........that is the most common reason for it not too cook.......since the microwave is a GE and it is 3.5 years old, i would say you are better off buying a new microwave, the mag tube starts at around $70.00 and up + the labor it costs too have a service person put it in........around another $60.00

GE Profile Microwave will not heat

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell which part the microwave needs without opening it up for examination. There are a few parts that, if defective, would prevent the oven from heating.

  • a high voltage transformer which passes energy to the magnetron
  • a magnetron which converts high-voltage electric energy to microwave radiation
  • a magnetron control circuit (usually with a microcontroller)
This is NOT a repair that you would want to attempt yourself. The labor for the repair would cost a minimum of $50 and shouldn't exceed $100. You'll also have to pay for the necessary part if it's still available from the manufacture or their parts distributor.

Microwave problems

I would suspect a bad magnetron. You should have a 5-year warranty on the magnetron. While GE will cover the magnetron cost, you would have to pay for labor.

It's cheaper by about $75 to remove it from the wall yourself and take it to the GE-authorized servicer.

If you decide to do that, the installation instructions can save you a lot of time. If you don't still have them, you can download them here:

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here:

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

JEM 31 is not heating

Sounds like you have a bad transformer. Magnatron should check less than 1 ohm (with wires unplugged). Diode should check resistance one way and open the other. Must have a proper diode checker for this. Check resistance on the capacitor (make sure it is discharged first). Resistance should come up then back to open, reverse and same thing if cap. is good. Check resistance on transformer windings.

Buzz, plastic smell and no heat

Chances are you have a magnetron that's failing. GE had a rash of "underperforming" magnetrons on these units. They replace the magnetron, stirrer and high-voltage diode at no charge for parts as long as a GE-authorized service center does the work. Sometimes the unit gets run too long in a failing state and the waveguide and chassis of the oven get damaged. The bulletin shows you where tyo check. To see if yours is covered, see this bulletin: Otherwise, you need to contact GE Customer Relations at 1-800-386-1215 as soon as possible and tell them your problem and they will put you in touch with a local authorized servicer.
