I've had a Garmin Etrex working fine for some time now but all of a sudden the screen disappears. The power is fine as they are new duracells and the backlight comes on, but no LCD graphics. Then, without explaination or change in operation the screen display will reappear at a later date, only to disappear again on another occasion. This has happened to me several times over the past few days and I'm worried about relying on it for navigation again

The mentioned problem is slightly different, but
for mine Venture exactly that helped. The trick is in putting the ribbon back after cleaning the contacts, to do so it is convenient to disattach the front panel from the display itself. On the first glance I expected no need in that. And ... be really careful. Good luck
Same problem (extra vertical lines and missing display content). I did upgrade recently with no avail. I did use beta softeare in the past. Could beta softeare caused the problem. I did not notice any mechanical problems such as broken connections/vibration induced changes. Any word from Garmin?
I have a 4 or 5 year old etrex legend, it also blanks and has lines on the screen. There are sites out there with a fix (not sure how good it is) having to do with the display's connector. Keep searching you will find it. Try

Have you updated your Garmin unit software recently?
I accidentally left my eTrex Legend on for a week. It would work for a short time and then the display would go blank save for a single vertical line. Using the on/off button did nothing. Taking out a battery momentarily and replacing it would result in a temporary restart with the on/off button. All functions worked but the display would malfunction minutes later.
The solution: restart using the on/off button after the battery disconnect procedure, wait until several satellites are received and use the on/off button to turn unit off. On restart it seems to work fine.

I lost everything except for a straight line going down the centre of the screen and it froze. I couldn't even turn it off. After changing the batteries, it seemed fine again, but the problem was not with the batteries. They also were almost new.
same problem - display appears and dissappears
The display on my etrex legend gets very erraric, and goes blank, especially when the temp gets below 50f. It also disappears when I turn on the backlite.
I have an E trex legend, screen is very erratic, sometimes OK, most times impossible to read. Sometimes resort to tapping the screen, which may sort the problem out for a few minutes. This may suggest some form of loose connection inside the device, but who knows. tried new batteries but no difference. Does anyone one know where you can get Garmin repairs in the UK?. The UK garmin web site just refers you back to the US site when you go to Out of Warranty repairs.

I have the exact same problem with my etrex H. NO DISPLAY. I also know the batteries are okay because they were new and the backlight will come on.
I haven't found any solutions. I tried tapping on it in different places and banging on it too as was suggested by some due to a loose connection. I haven't had a display for about a week regardless of when I try.
Same problem. Only way to reboot is to pull batteries.
Yes, both my husband and I have a Garmin Etrex, and our units do the same thing. Once we take out the batteries(even just one...) the units will come back to normal display. Unfortunately, you can never tell for how long. Mine worked fine for almost two hours before going blank with just a vertical line, this past Sunday, but my husband's konked out after only minutes of being on.
Exacy same problem on my 2 year old etrex. I went to use it while hunting to mark a downed deer and the display went completely blank except for a single vertical line. I have to remove the batteries to clear it. The unit repeats each time I re-power it up. I guess its going back to Garmin/Taiwan.
My Garmin eTrex Legend is doing the same thing. I can take out the battery and it will power back up with normal screen display but after a short time (seconds or sometimes minutes) the screen goes dead except one line from top to bottom of screen. I tried to power it up and shut it down as one writer suggested but it did not solve the problem. I'm not exactly sure how old mine is two or three years.
Same problem as EVERYONE else with the screen blanking out with black line. Reboot with battery removal works for a while. Then blanks out again.
