I've had a Garmin Etrex working fine for some time now but all of a sudden the screen disappears. The power is fine as they are new duracells and the backlight comes on, but no LCD graphics. Then, without explaination or change in operation the screen display will reappear at a later date, only to disappear again on another occasion. This has happened to me several times over the past few days and I'm worried about relying on it for navigation again

The mentioned problem is slightly different, but for mine Venture exactly that helped. The trick is in putting the ribbon back after cleaning the contacts, to do so it is convenient to disattach the front panel from the display itself. On the first glance I expected no need in that. And ... be really careful. Good luck
Same problem (extra vertical lines and missing display content). I did upgrade recently with no avail. I did use beta softeare in the past. Could beta softeare caused the problem. I did not notice any mechanical problems such as broken connections/vibration induced changes. Any word from Garmin?
I have a 4 or 5 year old etrex legend, it also blanks and has lines on the screen. There are sites out there with a fix (not sure how good it is) having to do with the display's connector. Keep searching you will find it. Try
I accidentally left my eTrex Legend on for a week. It would work for a short time and then the display would go blank save for a single vertical line. Using the on/off button did nothing. Taking out a battery momentarily and replacing it would result in a temporary restart with the on/off button. All functions worked but the display would malfunction minutes later.
The solution: restart using the on/off button after the battery disconnect procedure, wait until several satellites are received and use the on/off button to turn unit off. On restart it seems to work fine.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

The unit needs to have the screen facing up. The unit will not read if it is vertical. Garmin cust serv finally helped me with that one. Once you turn on the unit, it could take up to 20 minutes (usually about 3) to grab satelites.
Due to a new satellite launched this year, the WAAS is affected. Disable the WAAS, go to Garmin and download the latest software version FOR THIS UNIT. Install, enable WAAS and you should be good to go.
I have an older Garmin 12XL and suddenly the screen turned very dark. I tried replacing the batteries and let the GPS rest for a week so the internal lithium battery could re-charge. But that did not work. I just got an email from a friend who had the same problem... it turned out that his unit had changed the screen contrast setting all by its' self. This may not be the cause of your problem but it's worth trying... go into your "Settings" menu and reset the contrast and see if that cures the problem. Good luck.
I had the same problem with the eTrex Legend (monochrome) and tried the solution of taking it apart, cleaning the connections and putting it back together. This did not work for me. I then updated the firmware to version 3.9 and that solved the vertical line problem, at least for the time being.
I have the same problem. The unit works until I connect it to whatever computer via USB (Mac or PC). The screen blanks out as soon as I plug in the USB cable. I have to disconnect the device and only then I am able to turn it on again. That started after Firmware update from V 2.90 to 3.00 . I am not sure this is causing problem. What about the firmware versions of your devices ? Are they all on the latest ?
However, does anybody know if there is a way to go back to firmware version 2.9 if it is not possible anymore to connect the device to any computer (evtl. through putting data on the microSD card ?).
To my knowledge, a reset on a Garmin eTrex would require: Holding down the PAGE and PAGE UP buttons while simultaneously powering the unit. The Garmin eTrex will enter the service mode/display: - Bravo Version - Software Version - Time - Internal temperature of unit - Battery voltage - External voltage - Button presses - Other tech info
You can also perform an LCD display/screen check by pressing the PAGE button 2X.
A firendly word of advice: While entering the service mode is interesting and useful, be careful which buttons you press because it is also possible to rest the unit to factory settings within this mode. Pressing "up"+"enter"+"on/off" keys in service mode will reset the eTrex to factory defaults. All presets and data will be lost.
To exit just turn it off as normal, and then turn it back on as normal. Unless you deliberately reset the GPS, nothing should have changed.
Alternately, you can try: Hold down the find, click-stick, and page buttons. Press the power button, and when the title screen appears, release the buttons. This will clear all memory (you will lose all waypoints, etc. back them up first). Find button: bottom button on the left Click stick: the button on the face of the unit Page: the top button on the right Power: the bottom button on the right
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
People! The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.
had that problem too, it's a connection problem with the lcd screen. when you take the whole thing apart you will see 2 brass connectors that lead to the lcd screen (just under the thumb stick) I found mine was just a little sensitive to movement and one of the contacts had too much of a spacing i tighened it with a pinch of the pliers and seemed to work for me.. dont try if youre not sure what your doing, have it repaired by garmin. I'll try and get some pictures...
see discussion at http://californication.mtbguru.com/2005/11/20/deconstructing-the-garmin-etrex-vista/
Its possible that there's a bad connection at the ribbon cable, but most likely its a bad connection at the edge of the LCD glass panel. I've had two eTrex fail because of this problem.
Don't pay the riduculous price Garmin asks for repair - just buy a new Magellan unit. If you must get a Garmin, go with the high-sensitivity receiver.
