May I suggest the battery was very low. The Nikon delete routine shows a bright display after the file is deleted, this may take a bit of power. May I suggest you work on your files on your computer? That is, that the SD card out and work on the files on the computer. Now I suggest charging the camera and taking out the SD Card and then turning it on. If it works try it again with the SD card in.
At the top of the camera is a camera symbol and an arrow button. Push the camera button to call up pics and use the left/ right ring where the OK button is to scroll thru. When you get to a picture you do not like push the red garbage can button on the lower right rear of the camera. It will ask you to confirm, then it will delete.
Most likely it is a driver problem. There is a lot of problems between vista and older cameras. Unfortunately that is up to either Microsoft (there is a new Service Pack coming out, that might take care of a lot of things) or Canon to fix the camera. Check Canon's website and see if there is a download or firmware upgrade.
