Check the fuel filter for plugging, the fuel lines for hardness/cracking/splitting. Clean or replace the air filter. Clean the muffler if plugged. Make sure that the carburetor fasteners are tight. Check the spark plug condition--gap should be 0.020" and the insulator should be light to medium tan color. If still having problems, the carburetor may need to be cleaned and serviced. Hope this helps!

When go to cut engine is runnig but chain stops when touch the tree

Hi Pam:
Using chain saws takes a bit of getting used to, and it can be DANGEROUS.
- The chain must be sharp to be able to cut properly, and a sharp chain "bites" into the wood.
- Before you touch the chain into the wood, you have to speed up the engine. This takes some getting used to.
- Try this technique: With the chain about an inch above where you want to cut, squeeze the throttle about half way so the chain is spinning. Touch the chain to the wood and increase the engine speed as the chain starts to cut. The harder you cut, the more power you need to apply.
After a while it gets to be second nature.
Work Safe, and get an experienced friend to help with some "hands on" coaching.
Cheers.

Troubleshooting chainsaw

Sadly, the 3816 is not designed for larger timber. 38cc is only for smaller limbs, As a general rule also the largest timber to cut should only be 2/3 of the length of the bar

Saw quits after cutting wood for about 5 minutes

Are you sure you have the correct amount of 2-stroke oil mixed in the gas? It sounds like it is overheating. Also check the engine to make sure the fins aren't clogged with wood shavings.

42cc 18 inch craftsman chainsaw model 358-351910-18. Saw runs great at idle or while not cutting wood, when starting to cut wood just after the entire bar gets into the wood engine bogs down and chain...

Generally this is a fuel / air ratio problem. Usually it can be solved by a carb adjustment. On the carb there are usually two screws, one marked low or L , the other marked high or H. Low is your adjustment for idle mixture, high is for mixture at full throttle. The saw should Always be adjusted to run well during the cut. Make adjustments a little at a time, then try The saw. Continue small adjustments untill the saw is performing well at full throttle while Cutting.

I have a 4218av , saw stalls when you open up throttle to cut wood, fairly new, has min hours on saw. Starts ok and runs at high idle ok

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Make sure the carburetor is firmly mounted to the engine. Hope this helps!

What are the high and low carburetor settings on a poulan 3416 chainsaw?

are they two separate screws? one for fast, one for slow.for the slow setting, first start the saw then screw until motor runs smooth without chain moving....if to slow the motor will stop....for fast screw....rev motor flat out then adjust so it screams its head off so to speak....it will need all its power for cutting wood so don't think you are opening it up to much as its designed for it.

POULAN TRIGGER PROBLEM

Remove the air cleaner which usually exposes the carburetor--operate the throttle (engine off) and watch what moves--likely wood chips blocking the action--less likely, a wire linkage got bent somehow, or there is sawdust in the trigger mechanism. From your description, this saw starts full-throttle at the get-go. Sort of dangerous!
