OK these are my favorite there at at least a half a dozen possible problems

most apparent the hard drive shot it's wad

but hey there is light cf adapters and a cf card are way cheaper than a replacement hard drive oor sending to apple

oor you can get adventerios (like cheerios but different)

it could just be the harddrive being a wuss try (i know this sounds bad but what have you got to lose)hitting the ipod with the top while it is pointing down

why you ask the hard drive could just be lose (it has happened to mine twice)(go figure?)

and you can still force disk mode wether or not it will help it probably won't but you can try restoring it with itunes (might work or not if the hard drive is ka put)

and if you have any question or concerns i will try to help

The sad ipod is indicative of a hardware failure. Unfortunately it will need to be sent in for service. Or take it to and Apple store if there is one near you.

Start with these five simple solutions: Reset, retry, restart, reinstall, or restore
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/

If that is unhelpfull you have to contact apple or your dealer for support / repairs.

How to fix a error 48 with itunes

The message does not indicate that there is an issue with the iPod but that that iTunes was unable to read the iPod software update it uses to restore or update your iPod. You can delete the folder containing the iPod software update files so iTunes can download a new copy of the iPod software update.

Here are the steps to take if you get this message:

Eject iPod and quit iTunes.
Use Disk Utility in Mac OS X or run chkdsk in Windows to verify there are no other issues on your hard drive.
Locate the iPod Software Updates folder:
In Mac OS X, the folder is
/Users/username/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
In Windows Vista, the folder is
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the folder is
C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

Note: If you don't see the files in Windows, turn on the Show hidden files option.
Windows Vista: Open Computer and choose Folder and Search Options from the Organize menu.
Windows XP and 2000: Open My Computer and click Folder Options from the Tools menu.

unfortunately the password is whatever you set it as but you can do this. Plug in your iPod and iTunes will open ( or open it youself)Select all you songs by clicking ctrl and A. (PC's: Ctrl and A at the same time. Mac's: Apple and A at the same time.) Right click your songs.
Click "Get Info"
Click "Yes"
Click the "Options" tab
Check "Volume Adjustment"
Put the Curser all the way to "+100%". Select Ok!
Hidden Folder for Mac's
Enable hidden folders.
If you go into Terminal and run these two commands all the hidden files appear when you open Finder.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
To get back to hiding hidden files use these commands
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder
Navigate to the hidden folder named "iPod_Control", and once there click on the folder "Device". Once there, delete the file named "_volumelocked". Eject your iPod. Then, restart your iPod. You can do this by holding down the center and menu button for at least 6 seconds. Once your iPod has rebooted, check and make sure that it worked. Simply go into "Settings", "Volume Limit". If it asks for a PIN, you did it WRONG. Retry the above procedure.

Hidden folders for windows PC
Enable hidden folders.
In Windows explorer,go to "Tools", "Folder Options". Then click on the tab called "View", and under "Hidden Files and Folders", click "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
Navigate ("My Computer" to double-click on the icon of your attached iPod) to the hidden folder named "iPod_Control", and once there click on the folder "Device". Once there, copy the file named "_volumelocked" to a folder on your hard drive then delete it from the iPod.
Eject your iPod. Then, restart your iPod. You can do this by holding down the center and menu button for at least 6 seconds. If using an iPod Nano, hold down the center button and menu button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. Once your iPod has rebooted, check and make sure that it worked. Simply go into "Settings", "Volume Limit". If it asks for a PIN, you did it WRONG. Retry the above procedure.

Warning: Note that some methods may not work on all iPods. Not all ipods have the file called "_volumelocked" it is impossible to get better sound on some of the ipod gens, for example the 5g 60-80 gigabyte ipods. Don't Listen to musictoo loudly. It will destroy your hearing. Don't delete any more files than necessary as it may prevent your iPod from working

Connect your iPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one iPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked. If you can't unlock iPod using either [the code or connecting it to the computer you use to manage its songs]. . . you can restore your iPod to factory settings using iPod Updater. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to your iPod.
