  • Remove the disc and reinsert it.
  • If the disc has a label, insert it with the label side up.
  • Check whether the disc is scratched or dirty. If dirty, wipe it gently with a soft cloth.
  • Make sure the disc has not been exposed to high temperatures, high humidity or direct sunlight. When discs will not be used for an extended period of time, store them in their cases. Stacking uncased discs or storing them at an angle can cause them to warp.
  • DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW discs that have not been finalized cannot be played.
  • When outputting DVD content or PLAYSTATION®3 format software in SD resolution, only discs recorded in the NTSC standard can be played.

My ps3 plays games fine and up until recently DVD's also, now it recognises the DVD's but when I go to play it, the screen goes blank and I have to turn off my station in order to start it up...

Over time, the reading laser in most consumer electronics can begin to slip out of alignment. This could cause the issue you are seeing. Firstly, insure that this issue occurs with all DVDs and not merely a few. This will allow you to be sure the issue is with your PS3 and not a scratched or poorly encoded disc.

If it does indeed occur with all DVDs, you may wish to try connecting the PS3 with a different video cable (i,e. switch from HDMI to RCA or vice versa) to insure it's not a copy protection glitch.

There are also several options in the Video Playback section of the PS3's Settings menu that can cause odd effects when playing discs. Insure that all upscalling is disabled, and that the proper video output format is selected. Experiment with the options and try again.

Lastly, if all of this fails, you may need to return to PS3 to Sony for repair. Some sites will tell you that running the PS3 upside down can cause discs to play properly, but I do not recommend attempting this, since the PS3's unique shape makes it especially susceptible to bumps which could cause further damage.

Put game in, doesnt play but makes the sound of a disc being loaded into unit after about 10 secs and will not play

This is a problem occurring in all the play station 3 consoles....... this is mainly because of the poor quality of the disc.....as a result it leads to the damage of ur PS3 lens..............use good original discs........the heating effect is due to the long usage of pirated discs ...
check your lens if its working good then better download this Repair Guide for further information .........

JVC DVD Burner fails to recognise DVD

Hi,

see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
Does the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track. Please refer to the image i have attached.

Also Make sure your box is not blowing really hot air and nothing is right behind it blocking it.. Turn it off for a few minutes and let it cool down and then give it a try playing the discs..

CD player fails to read CDs

It's likely it's dirt on the CD lens. You can try cleaning it with a lens cleaning disc. But if the lens has been damaged it will never read the disc again, no matter how many times it is cleaned.
