Was having problems w/ internet connection. Brighthouse tech just left. Replaced modem and fixed a loose wire at box outside. Still won't hook to wireless and says that it is probably my router

If you have a separate modem and router turn both off and reboot only modem till all lights up the reboot router till all lights up in that order sounds simple communication problem between router and modem. If router modem combo unit disconnect either dsl or cable from router/modem leave diconnected for a short time then reconnect and reboot till all lights up. Hope this helps.

What you're missing is that ALL the PCs will be connecting THROUGH the router to the Modem. Unplug the PC network Cable from the modem, then plug a network cable from the router's INTERNET port into the modem (where you removed the PC's network cable). Now, plug the PC's network cable into one of the ports on the router (usually 4 or more, marked 1,2,3,4. Think of a Router as a "splitter". It connects to the Modem, then several devices connect to the Router, some of them by wire and some by Wi-Fi. So your desktop PC is connected by wire to the router and your laptop PC is probably connected by Wi-Fi (wire is an option, as well). The Router sorts out all those signals and communicates with the Modem. Sound reasonable?

My cable network is not reading my router what could the problem be?

First off you should think if you changed anything recently, like driver updates, updated your computer or Operating System? That could give BIG clues to whats the problem.
What type of OS are you using?(ie,xp,vista,7) is it 32bit(86x) or 64bit(64x)?
When I updated my pc to a new 64bit win 7 model, my old wireless g would not work due to compatibility issues(no driver update).
Always try first:
1. unplug all power to router and modem for 30 sec(differs with model)and pc if connected through gateway.
2. Connect router first(wait for full boot-up) then connect modem(wait for full boot-up)then re-boot router while modem is still green(this allows the router and modem to communicate and prepares to open ports. Sometimes the order needs to be reversed to create a comm link.
3. Next thing would be to make sure its the router and not your internet connection(modem) itself. Plug directly into the modem (bypass the router) and make sure you get internet.
4. Last but not least, check to see if you can access your router(everything connected during this test), open up a browser and type your provider I.P.for your router into the browser bar at the top of the page,( ie. 192.168.1.1) different providers are a little different, if it allows you to access your router then it is communicating, and may be being blocked by firewall preferences or closed ports.

Is this the initial set-up of the network? Sometimes it just needs to be rebooted a few times to connect. The way to reboot the network is to turn off the computers, then unplug the router, next unplug the modem. wait about 30/60 seconds then plug in the power to the modem. Wait for the modem to fully boot. Wait a minute or two, then plug in the power to the router. Wait till it has booted, another minute or two. Once the router is fully booted, then turn on the pc and check to see if it connects. If the computer was previously connected to the modem, before the router was incorporated, it still has the ip address assigned by the modem and has trouble releasing it and getting an ip address from the router.

I have to turn the modem off and back on every time i get on my computer to get it to connect to my dlink router. how can i solve this

If it is wired through the LAN ethernet connection directly to your computer it is cause by unplugging the ethernet. Routers and modems hate a ethernet cable unplugged and will stop communicating if unplugged. You will have to reset almost every time. When reset the router goes out and looks at what is connected and then handshakes with it. If it is a wireless issue you can reset your wireless setting in your control panel. This shouldnt happen as your wireless network should always be broadcasting. Generally, to connect back to a router you only need to unplug the router to re-establish the connection to the modem. Going all wireless is the only way to fix this

My two computers cannot pass through my broadband provider (through the switching hub) at the same time.

that is not possible for an single isp connection you can only connect one computer at a time and hub is basically a repeater that is it simply repeats the packets it receives from one input out the others.

When did the router stop working?

Have you tried a new cable between the router and the modem?

Since the status light is off on the router, that tells me that there is no communication between the router and modem. Is it possible that the router was reset by accident? Resetting it will put all settings to default. If it has been reset then you need to sign on to the router to setup the communication again to your modem. Typically this is done via the IP address.

I can walk you through those steps if that is the case. Try supplying a different cable though between the router and modem. Power off both of them, power on the modem and then power on the router....then try to connect to the Internet.

Try rebooting the computer, if it does not pick up an IP address. Try taking the router out of the mix. If the computer gets an IP address from the modem then you need to reset your router. If your PC does not connect straight through the modem. Call your provider to make sure they are communicating with the modem. If they are communicating then you need a new NIC.

Use of router in network

Try reset the router & cable modem. There ia a reset (very small) button on the back of the wireless router & the modem. Disconnect the power cords to both. Use a pen & hold in for 10 seconds (router & modem). Re-connect power (router & modem) & restart PC. If your service still has not returned. Chances are it's your internet provider & not you. Double check by connecting your modem directly to your PC.

Luck!
