I have a duo therm model 59516.331 that the compressor will not start. Thermostat seems to work fine for the furnace, the fan runs both low and high and comes on when set to cool. I checked the freeze control and it is open. I jumped out the relay on the control board (blue and black wires) and the compressor started and began blowing cold air. Is the relay board bad or could something else be keeping the compressor relay from closing?
Your switch should be oopen but when it reaches 41 degrees it should open so the system shuts off before it damages the compresor by sludging it, i have the same unit and my compresor runs for 5 seconds and shuts off, i checked the amp draw at the compresor and it draws 21 22 amps trying to start after the initial 5 second run, but it wont come on againts a load so the comprresos equilizes and tries to start over again with out positive results. i bipass the external obverload on top of compresor terminals area, still no fix yet, the relay on the control board continious to send power to the compresor and still draws , so if there is a problem with the control relay i would open up and dont send power to the compresor so i dont think is the relay, i am a a/c service man for
35 years and do this for a living still today, by experience i think it is the compresor gone bad but will try by passing the relay just to see what happens, also it could be bad capacitor since it have a hard start relay and start capacitor (black )also a run (silver ) capacitor they check ok, there is no way to check the charge unles you install a saddle tap to check presures and rechage this unit i think the compresor replacement is the way to go ( around 250) plus labor and freon r22 e mail add [email protected].
Hello,The freezestat should be closed.Try jumping that out .

my duo therm air works beautifuly all day but at night when we go to bed it seams to turn on and shut off rapidly. what could be wrong?
SOURCE: when set to cool and thermostat turned down all it
Check to make sure the compressor and condenser fan are working. If the are you may need to have the charged. If not you need to find out why.

First make sure the breaker isn't tripped. Next use a voltmeter to check for power on the primary and secondary side of the contactor with it pulled in. If you have power then check the capacitor. If it looks swollen then it is bad or you can check it with a multimeter with the capacitor test function or take it to a heating and air supply and they can check it for you. If the capacitor is good and you have power, then use an ohmmeter to check the motor windings for continuity. Locate the common wire and connect one meter lead to it. Then connect the other lead to the start winding and read the meter and then connect that lead to the run winding and read the meter again. You should have some resistance on both. There will be more on the start winding than the run winding.

Can you give us some more helpful information-- so we can help diagnose the problem:
Like-- what is the outside temperature?--
Have you been able to get heat out of your heat pump before, at this low of an outside temperature?
And which fan are you talking about-- the inside fan, or the outside fan?
Is the inside coil getting nice and warm-- or just barely warm?
and is there frost on the outside coil-- Can you defrost it, but shutting the unit off until the ice is cleared?
Let us know, and we'll better be able to help you to the next step.

The freeze control should only be closed when the temperature it senses drops below 41 degrees, this is according to duo therm manual I found online. Any suggestions? I believe my relay board is bad.
Replaced relay board and the unit is now working properly.
