Question about Canon PowerShot S3 IS Digital Camera

Shuts down while using the zoom lever

Hi,

My Canon Powershot S3 IS started to shut down whenever I use the zoom lever. (For instance when I zoom in, the camera shuts down without any alert...) This happens not only in the photo taking mode but also in the photo play mode. The same issue: as I am previewing a photo if I use the zoom lever to get closer, the camera goes off. When I start the camera on the play mode while the lens is totally off this goes on happening.

I tried this with different sets of batteries, different SD Cards and the scenario is the same.

Did anyone had a similar problem? Do you have any suggestions? This problem yields the camera nearly disfunctional and I was not planning to buy a new camera until next year.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

I just bought a used S3 IS and it has the same problem exactly as you described it. When zooming (optical zoom), the camera shuts off upon reaching maximum zoom. The same happens when viewing photos and zooming in to maximum zoom, regardless of whether the lens is in or out.

Same thing here. The camera works fine in general, but during zooming the camera sometimes shuts off. The worst part: any video that you were taking is lost, so no zooming when taping the wedding vows... It seems to be happening more and more often as time progresses. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, I have the same exact problem. It started out being only an occasional annoyance, but now it's happening every time. I just got an email back from Canon offering to repair for $119 plus parts, or to swap for a re-furb S3IS for $165 plus $10 shipping.

I sure would like to find a fix myself!

It seems like on my unit this problem is caused by some electrical issue with the zoom lever, not a physical problem with the lens. The reason that I think this is that (a) it only happens when the lever is pushed all the way to the left (zoom out), not when zooming out slowly, (b) it also happens while still in the digital zoom range, i.e. when no lens movement is needed, and (c) the screen 'blanks out' and no error is being displayed, which would be consistent with something shorting out (the chip does not report the error on screen, it's a 'hard shutdown'). If anyone finds more details on a fix or on what the repair guy needed to do, please post here. -pgk

Same exact problem here. I've received an email back from Canon tech support. $119 plus parts to repair, or I can swap for a refurbished model for $165 plus $10 shipping.

I was hoping to find some simple answer here. Sigh.

Hiyour unit might has in zoom control gear unit or zoom in and out detecting sensor area. this type of problem might has two solution to technician. first is change defective gears. second is a whole lens unit replactment. either or any other problem of this type of camera they just charge you around $65 to 115 depend on what your local repair shop want to charge.

How do I activate digital zoom on my canon S3IS

I believe there is a ring around the button the shutter button (the button you press to take the photos. Your sort of push it left or right (near or far). The digital zoom should activate after it goes past its optical zoom range. Push it only slightly to slow down the zoom process.

Powershot SD1000 automatically shuts down in Camera mode

In any mode that the camera will stay on, press the "Menu" button and navigate to the RESET option and try to reset the camera. See if this will get the camera to function properly.

Displays "lens Error"

This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Camera Shutting Down

Did this for the same problem on the PowerShot A570 IS and it worked wonderfully (thanks to other poster): For the PowerShot A 430: Take out the batteries, then hold down the power button for 30 seconds or more, then reinstall the batteries. Problem solved!

Shuts down when zooming

hi...The transmission system that moves the lens in and out has a problem with it's gears. There is most likely a gear or an actuator that has fallen out of alignment and is getting stuck at a certain point as the lens comes in/out.
There is some disturbacnce of the lens arrangement  that is preventing the lens from coming in/out.
Any of these symptoms above could trigger the camera to shut itself off to protect itself from further damage.
thank u rate me!!!

Zooming in and out

I know nothing that will cause it to shut down like that unless it's the batteries (bad set, bad brand?), or unless it's after a few minutes of non-use and it turns off due to power saving mode.

If it is just doing an auto power down malfunction, it requires service and I would call Canon and see what your warranty/service/upgrade options are.

Hope this helps!

Powers off

e18 is a lens error message, the lens is stuck or bent, and wouldn't come out, that's why camera shuts off after it tries to do so at the start, not much you can do, but replace the whole lens assembly
