I've had the same thing. I can find nothing wrong with the system or the hard disk. Can boot fine via windows cd. Hard drive seems to have no problems and has been in use for years. Most recent change was a new drive about 5 months ago. Completely puzzling since I cannot find anything to fix.
I have gone ahead and utilized fixmbr and fixboot to no avail. Have been using windows xp home w/sp3 for several months without issue.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.!!

Green power light comes on but disk drive lights keep blinking and my screen is black on my dell dimension 4700

Remove ALL media from the machine DVD, CD, USB, etc. Check/reseat all Monitor cables. Reboot. If that fails, unplug , plug back in in 30 seconds or so. reboot, if you get a Dell Logo, Open the boot Menu and select Boot from HDD first.

Dell dimension c521 solid amber light

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the computer?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the computer is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problemis with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and takenote of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your power supply is going bad or is bad. Sometimes the power supply has enough power to emit a light or make lights come on but not enough power to start the fans or disk drives.

Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Cant turn my computer on and there is a yellow blinking light

How many blinks? Count and notice the patterns of the blinks (3 long blinks or 1 long blink followed by two short blinks).

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of thememory chips. If all the above fails, you problem could be your Video Card or a motherboard issue.

I have a Dimension 4700 and it will not boot more than half the time. So I did a clean OS install and drivers, updated everything and it was working great. Tried to turn it on this morning and the same...

If you have a Dell, then do this the next time.

As soon as you see your system creating problems again, turn to the back of the computer. There are 4 LED lights. See the status of those lights, I mean, green, orange etc. Check it on support.dell.com and see if you find something useful.

Can't boot up Dell 5100 Dimension, amber light flashes

When you mean the amber light, is that the blinking hard drive access light or the power light? Different cases have different colors on it. Mine has blue and green lights.

If you see the boot screen (bios) and then after it goes to boot, does it blink and hang?

This could be a simple operating system issue, hard drive or hardware/motherboard issue. If you could provide more information, that would help.

Dell Dimension 4600 stalls during boot

Turn the computer's power on.
Immediately put the original Windows XP CD into the drive.
Tell the computer to boot from the CD (not from the hard-drive).
Does it start to boot from the CD?
Do you get as far as the "repair/install" boot-screen?
If so, your basic hardware is OK, and turn your computer off,
rather than choosing "repair" or "install".
Then, it's probably either the hard-drive that is failing,
or the installed copy of Windows XP is fuddle-duddle-ucked up, so that it cannot finish the "Windows startup" processing.
