Laptop battery I have a dell laptop that i have had for about 5 month. I just about allways leave it plugged in to the outlet. Will this reduce the battery life by constantly charging? or does it not charge when connected to the outlet? Thanks

My Inspiron 6300 has always been plugged in and is circa 20 months old. I now find the unplugged unit (when moving from room to room) only lasts about 3 minutes from a full charge. Care should be taken with laptops if majority in charge. However, my Latitude is three years old and gets a mixture of on and off charge (docked via a port replicator) has been fine for about 30 months still giving out a respectable 3 or so hours use.

It does charge until the battery reaches full charge, then charger stops and laptop use adapter's power. The whole system is thought to not damage or wear the battery while in charge. Leave battery safely inside your Dell while using it with power adaptor, it should not make any difference in your battery life.

Battery low while already plugged in

If thelaptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out.Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles andwill lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and graduallythe charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The batteryshows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops offto zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptablecharge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

Should I Remove the Laptop Battery?

Question: Should I Remove the Laptop Battery?

I have a dell latitude d820 laptop at home which I use as a desktop replacement. As such, 99% of the time the laptop is being used it is plugged in. I wonder if I should remove the dell latitude d820 battery so that it is not permanently being charged, or does the laptop cut off the current to the battery once it is fully charged? I do unplug the laptop when I turn it off.

Answer: When using a laptop as a desktop replacement the battery should not be left in for long periods of time. The laptop will over time discharge the battery. Remove the battery – making sure that it is charged to 40% and store it in a dry, warm place. Ensure that it is wrapped protectively and nothing will be dropped on it.

The battery should be re-installed every 3-4 weeks and allowed to fully discharge. Leaving a battery in storage for longer than this without using could cause the battery to fully discharge as the circuitry of the battery itself consumes power.

Leaving a battery in a laptop while using an electrical outlet for long periods of time will keep the battery in a constant state of charging up and that will reduce the life cycle of the battery.

Remember that when you have removed the dell vostro 1500 battery from a laptop while using with an electrical outlet – the automatic battery backup is no longer functional. Make sure to plug your laptop into an uninterrupted power source (UPS) not directly into an outlet or surge protector.

When the laptop is unplugged does it l loose its charge even though it is not turned on? Also, can you overcharge and hurt the battery?

There is a gradual discharge from the laptop and the battery will go flat in a few weeks. The laptop is designed to charge the battery at an optimal rate. If you use the laptop on the mains supply with the battery allways, the battery will degrade. If you don't need the battery, charge it up and then remove it when you turn your laptop off. That way the chemical reaction is reduced and it will have a good shelf life. Charge it up twice a year if you are storing the battery.

I had my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running. The battery was running down so I plugged the power pack into the electrical outlet first and then into the laptop. The screen went blank and I have not been...

Which ever way round you plugged in should not have resulted in what happened.
You should have a green light on the adaptors case when plugged into the mains weather it's plugged into the laptop or not, if not check the plug fuse.
Is it the correct adaptor for the Laptop? TO CHECK look at the underside of the adaptor the output voltage and amps should be the same as on the base of the Laptop.
Hold the power button down for longer than 5 seconds to ensure the Laptop is off.
Remove the battery and try with just the adaptor plugged in ONLY if its the same output voltage as the laptop.
Remove the memory stick and replace then try and boot again this can sometimes reset the computer.
Leave the adaptor plugged in with the Laptop off to try and put some power in the battery and then try with just the battery.
I have a feeling the adaptor is faulty and it was coincidental that the laptop switched off as you plugged it in, I think you just ran out of battery power.
If in doubt get an electrical shop to test the adaptors output.

Dell 9400 wont show AC power icon

If the computer is connected to an electrical outlet, the about10.jpg light operates as follows:
  • Solid green: The battery is charging.

  • Flashing green: The battery is almost fully charged.

If the computer is running on a battery, the about41.jpg light operates as follows:
  • Off: The battery is adequately charged (or the computer is turned off).

  • Flashing orange: The battery charge is low.

  • Solid orange: The battery charge is critically low.
Looks like the AC adaptor is faulty.

Power problem

Seeing as you notice that your battery life is half, this most likely means your battery is no longer able to hold a charge, or a full charge. It could also mean the battery is defective.
If your laptop is still under warranty, the manufacturer may replace it. If not, you'll have to buy a new battery, unless you always keep it plugged in anyways.

Battery percentage is decreasing...

If your battery is a lithium ion battery then according to the folks at Battery University:
"The worst condition is keeping a fully charged battery at elevated temperatures, which is the case with running laptop batteries. If used on main power, the battery inside a laptop will only last for 12-18 months. I must hasten to explain that the pack does not die suddenly but begins with reduced run-times"
see their website at : http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
Hope that helps.

I appears you have a Power on Password, the password is stored on an EEPROM chip and removing the BIOS battery will not reset or remove the password.
