    Hello there,

I have a problem with my new ricoh r8, bought last week..........

.it does not focus in any recording  mode , (playback is fine ).

When on the green mode it says : "in synchronised monitor  mode ".

The screen is black and when i press the button, just vague (no picture  ,just some variations of light )

The camera makes quite a bit of  mechanical noise when turning on (more then usual ) and a lot of noise when turning it off ,sort of coughing and screeching .

Please note that i am very carefull with my camera  (actually for thirty years i am a nikon-adept ), no dirt or dust on the lens or in the tube .I did not drop the camera or anything like that

I tried the different settings , charged the battery etc .

So, what can be the solution  ???

    Please advise ,

My Ricoh R7 bought 2 months ago has a similar problem. When I switch it on the lens extends and retracts about three times and then just dies.No screen display or anything. If I press Play(>) and Menu button it displays the screen. It also displays an error message:00-00-00

Anybody an idea what this means?

Lens is open and will not retract. We can review the last shots taken but, apart from motor noise, nothing happens. Only 16 months since purchase.

Same problem with an older Caplio R3 model - lens wouldn't retract, camera made nasty grinding noises and the LCD screen showed a white and grey blur. Took it back to the camera shop where I bought it and they told me this is quite common with Caplios. Didn't tell me that when I was buying it!! Had it fixed but it took 5 weeks and cost almost as much as a new camera. When it works this camera is great - especially the 1cm macro - but the whole range appears to be mechanically unreliable.

Hi, Exactly same problem with my daughter's caplio R6 bought 9 months ago - lens won't retract on power off, image blurred in shoot mode, then goes black & lens makes whirring noise. Playback & menu screens working OK. sent back for repair under warrantee. Daughter is upset as it was her pride & joy - failed halfway into her holiday! I'll see if the repair is guaranteed as would expect a camera costing over £100 to last more than 12 months! Won't buy Ricoh again.

Problem of lens not retracting fixed in one day by general camera serviceman. He said a part was broken and has fixed it without access to genuine parts.

Hi. Exactly the same problem here. it happened after I had a walk in the rain and had my camera in my backpack. It seems the backpack wasn't waterproof...

Dear Sir, I accidentally dropped my Ricoh Caplio R6, 4 days ago, on concrete pavement while taking photos. The zoom lens was stuck open and cannot retract. Please give advise to me where to repair this...

Professional repair will likely cost more than the value of the camera. But here are some things that you might try yourself.Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them.
And here's a 16 minute video summary of the info shown in the link. But note that the article link above goes into even greater detail than this video:

Hi, someone drop my Ricoh R7 camera in the floor and since then the lens can not be withdrawn. It make some noise but isn't moving and doesn't switch on.

Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

Camera jam

All the R series Ricohs have a pretty complicated lens system employing 2 swing-out lenses which can get stuck pretty easily, or worse, broken. If you are very good at taking things to bits you might have a go at fixing it (I've done several that were not TOO bad) since picking up one on Ebay with a good lens unit is almost impossible.

Ricoh caplio r3 digital camera.

This has happened to me a couple of times. It appeared when the camera was getting a lot of use and it wouldn't turn off - it was jammed on. I had to leave it a few minutes and not touch it - turn it off, then it was ok. I think it was overheated!

Ricoh Caplio R4 Lens

This is an easy fix for a camera shop. Just tell them that your lens is off track, and needs to be aligned. It should cost less than $50.00. If you are really good with electronics, you can attempt it yourself. Just let me know if you need the schematic to the camera. Best regards, Bill
