Tiger direct
What you have to do is make sure anything you order, works for your laptop. I go with the usb adapters because I can always use them on desktops or towers later. With the PCMCIA card bus cards you can only use them on laptops.

the one I have linked to at Tigerdirect is as a minimum, 266 processor, Win98,ME,2000,XP, and Vista.

the one at geeks is pentium1 as a minimum, which puts the processor at probably a 166 up to new machines and most operating systems but not Vista supported.

You might try any local resources that are available.

Your wireless USB adapter CAN be used with more than one computer, yes. The CD is not necessary as drivers for your specific product can be downloaded from the manufacturers website.
If you provide the make/model of your USB wireless I can find the drivers for you

Try unplugging the wireless adapter and plugging into a different usb connection. Windows will install it and then check if it works. You can also try uninstalling the adapter from the device manager and search the manufacturers support website for the driver download page. You should be able to find the wireless adapter driver here, download and follow installation instructions to install a new one.

My laptop is old & doesnt have wifi capabilities and im trying to get it to link up with my internet. how do i go about doing that?

The only way you would be able to do that right now is to use an ethernet cable. The second way is to by a wireless card and install it in your laptop.

Wireless adapter issue

Is the wireless adapter built-in or is it a USB wireless adapter or a PCMCIA wireless adapter?
What make and model is the wireless adapter?
Is the signal strength on the wireless adapter at a good/high level?

You need a PCMCIA Wireless adaptor, (this model you are getting has two slots that it will fit in) - and you must make sure you have a wireless router in your house to broadcast a wireless signal for it to recieve.

Download the 8187b drivers from Realtek's site. You then need to go in and edit the .inf file to read like this:

;; IDs for 98SE/ME/2K/XP
%RTL8187B.DeviceDesc% = RTL8187B.ndi, USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8197&REV_0200
%RTL8187B.DeviceDesc% = RTL8187B.ndi, USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8189&REV_0200

After the edit, install as usual from the device manager.
