Your mp3 player has two types of memory in it. The hard drive (where the music and photos are stored) and the Ram (where the firmware and active files are temporarily hosted).
When you soft reset your GoGear, it flushes the RAM, and restarts the operating system (which is why the contents of the hard drive does not get erased).

"Unable to Init" indicates a mechanical error, unless you're able to find a stuck paper or parts of a stuck paper or similar, you'll have to send the unit to service to have it fixed.

I was able to pry the stuck tab open with a small flat head screwdriver. After a number or repetitions of that process, plus some repeated pushing on the tabs, they started working normally.
