Black Vertical line about an inch wide right of middle - PFM-42V1 Sony

This black line is a permanent addition now to my screen. Sometimes a second line will also appear about 2 inches to the right of the current line... it comes and goes though.

Anyone with any idea how or why this line exists, or even why the second line will pop up from time to time....

I have the same problem when I first bought it in 2004. Sony replaced the whole panel since it is under warranty. It happened again after 4 years. I called Sony this morning, they told me that this model is discontinued. There will be no parts, they told me to toss it out.

The problem is the actual PDP panel address chips blown or a faulty ribbon cable to the PDP or if your lucky it may be a dry joint - Tap the ribbon while the set is on very lightly on all cables with something plastic and see if the black line goes away - if so your lucky and its an easy but fiddly repair.

Vertical black lines on screen

Unfortunately it sounds like the video processor or a capacitor inside the TV has started malfunctioning, causing the vertical lines. I recommend contacting where you purchased the TV from and ask for help regarding a repair or replacement if it's still in warranty.

Hope I helped,

Permanent Vertical Line on my Sony Bravia 46 inch LCD TV

What you're describing is usually the result of an improperly seated connector. With the power disconnected, open the tv and locate any connectors between the LCD screen and the driver circuit board. Unplug them, and reconnect it assuring it's properly and firmly seated. Be careful when handling these cables as they tend to be quite fragile... take your time.

Pulsing/strobing on black screens or dark backgrounds

It is very likely that there are electrolytic capacitors going high in ESR on the processor and driver boards, and also in the power supply areas. The tech should be able to see this by monitoring supply distributions with a scope.

Depending on the complexity of changing the caps on the boards (if it is actualy a cap problem), the best choice may be board replacements.

In almost all the cases where I had this type of fault, it was a number of capacitors that had to be replaced.

sounds like X buffer/scan or control/logic problems. without good service info you will have a hard time troubleshooting. And it will get expensive guessing. Could even be a panel, probably gonna need a pro look.

Vertical Black line on display

Rakesh, You have a "dual scan" panel, this is why the line only decends down the screen half-way. This could be a connection problem on the buffer board which causes loss of the drive signal only to that part of the display which it is connected to. The vertical address buffer will be located on the top rear of the display, use great caution in inspecting these cables and connectors. If the integrity of the cable and connector is good the panel itself may be bad due to the drive IC being located on the ribbon cable attached to the panel body. this is better known as COF or, chip-on-film technology. I hope this helps you. Good luck. Joe Weibel CustomElectronics.Org
