My Sony STR-DE 135 received shows the "protect" mode with nothing hooked up to it. No speakers - no other units. What can I do?

Hi Roscoe... check all your speaker connections for shorted wires, check the speaker wires for any frayed or chaffed bits. Check your speakers with a meter for the correct impedance.

If all of these appear ok, then the amp has developed a fault. You can prove the amp or the speaker system one way or the other by disconnecting the amp from the speakers and see if you stil get protect

Sony Receiver STR-DE325 is saying protect

If the unit does turn without protect without the speakers,

then you just found the cause.

If the unit is still in protect it needs servicing.

Have a tech to guide you if you need to DIY.

Board level troubleshooting is the next thing to do.

these may take some time, but i do hope youll make it.

Push power protect wat does this mean on my system pleases

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

When i turn it on it says protect and it turns off after that

Hello,

Usually a protect fault will indicate a bad transistor in the amplification section. I suspect that the control circuit is sensing a fluctuation in the power supply and going in to protect mode. (assuming that the protect circuit itself is working properly) If a voltage is too high the unit will go in to protect mode to prevent damage to the speakers and the rest of the unit. I would take the unit in to a local repair shop and get a estimate of repair charges.

Hope this helps.....

How do I reset my amp / receiver from protect mode ?

My reciever is blinkning 'protect' after being turned on. It starts up as normal but after the initial start it starts flashing 'protect' and after it starts flashing I can not do anything but turn it off....

It shows protect when it senses a problem with the output wires shorted or some internal fault. Try disconnecting all the speaker wires and power up again. If it still shows protect, then the fault is internal.

Won't go off protect mode

When the speaker wires shorted to each other, the output transistors for that channel probably shorted as well. This means that the receiver needs repair. The typical parts cost for this usually runs between $20-$40.

Protect flashes. I reset as manual instructed. I

Don't forget to disconnect your sources also(dvd, satellite, vcr,cd player, etc) they could have a short in any of them causing receiver to go into protect,If still flashing "protect" your Sony could have an internal short of it's own, or caused by an external short previously mentioned. Good luck !

PROTECT DISPLAYED ON RECEIVER

This generally means you've got a short somewhere, and the received is trying to protect itself.

My suggestion is to disconnect all of your speakers at both ends, and reconnect them.

Most times this happens because a speaker wire is lose, and the positive and negative connections are touching each other, causing it to short out.

Stuck in protect mode

Speakers shorted out, blew a fuse. Replace the unit or (cross your fingers and) open up the box and find the blown fuse.
