I have the same problem - have been trying to find a solution for months now. I've downloaded and re-downloaded all of the drivers (they keep mentioning included software on the website - but no software was included). Now two of the zip files in the driver list will not open - indicating there are errors. I have my 3rd support question into WD, and am hoping to find a solution soon. I'm getting very frustrated!

I just bought a My Book Essential 500 gbs external drive and after one week it stopped working now i see all over the net 1000s of people complaining about the same thing. I contacted western digital and they told me to replace the case or get some company to do data recovery. I put 5 years worth of work on there and after that it just stopped working. My question is why should i have to buy a new case or pay for data recovery. How can this company get away with this

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2008

Well, everything that was described is right for me too. It is really frustrating since all of my stuff is inside this external hard drive and my stuff's worth is huge. The computer keeps telling me that the device is unknown.
I hope so much that my stuff can be saved.

i have a problem also with the same hard disk model , ut's exactly the same model "Western Digital My Book Premium ES Edition WD5000H1U-00 500 GB " , but i don't think it's exactly the same problem you have, i bought it since like five months ago, and it was working so perfect while i'm backing my data on it, but suddenly when i started to get my data back it couldn't be readable for my pc or any of other six pc's, it gives me a "local disk ' name, and "bad file system' message if i tried to access it, i cannot believe i lost all my data for something like this, please HELP.

My "My Book" just recently malfunctioned. I tried opening the drive onmy computer and it froze the window. So I unplugged it and when Iplugged it back in it tried installing the drivers again but froze andnow the two lights stay on and the computer does not recognize it. Itried plugging the My Book into another computer and the same thinghappens. If you could assist me on correcting this problem it would behighly appreciated and could you also direct me to the location for thedrivers for this product because it is not on the "Support >Downloads > My Book Premium ES Edition."

I had this problem. After a year my WD5000H1U-00 just stopped working. Made funny clicking sounds. Would spin up then spin down endlessly. Computer stopped recognizing it altogether. I tried everything. Here is what I finally had to do. The solution isn't pretty but it is effective and probably the only thing you can do really. Open the casing, take out the hard drive. Unscrew and remove the little part that acts as a connecting conduit. There's your problem. Toss it.

Go to a computer parts store and ask for an SATA to USB 2.0 cable. They are about $25.00. Plug that in to your hard drive where you unplugged the power and connectivity conduits. It should power up and work just fine. You can either move all the information onto another hard drive with a pretty casing or you can leave it the way that it is. It will still work the same, just won't look as nice on your desk.

Hello, I'm not the expert on informatics and hardware, but I'm facing the same problems described above.

My question about the SATA to USB 2.0 cable is, it should be a "SATA or IDE USB 2.0 Cable Converter with Power Supply" or just a "SATA to USB 2.0 cable"?

Thanks in advance for the answer

Lots of posts on this on other boards -- I was looking for output voltage of AC adapters as they are not labeled WD and had mixed multiples from other devices in one box while moving-- -- found that answer -- BUT I also saw several people whose drive stopped working suddenly. One got a tip from WD support to unplug adaptor from power strip and into wall socket directly -- This seemed to have solved this for many. Being a study of electrical and electronics I have a suspicion that the current capacity of the strip plug cord wires or strip internals are being overloaded. This will cause a drop in voltage out of the power supply itself, thus low voltage to the drive. One individual re-created the problem by again going back to a loaded strip. No guarantees but worth a try!!

Okay i had my book completely malfunction i have the WD5000h1u-00
i use it as a back up but i recently downloaded too much and filled up my primary harddrive so i used it as my primary store for pictures etc...
well obviously it broke and i had no way to get my data.
after looking online and finding no real answer i tried a series of things whilst possibly co-incidental and maybe with redundant steps it still resulted in a fix.
basically i took apart the harddrive with this model there is no lock, no screw and no easy release but if you use a screwdrive and run it along the edge of the case you can pop all the glue and a bit of plastic but really do minimal damage, mine has no aestetic marks,
i then removed all the parts down to the board that needs the 6 pin screwdriver and put the thing back together being careful to ensure everything was connected.
then i plugged it in to the power and the usb and restarted my laptop
on the reboot it works, don't rely on the lights though as mine just had a solid blue bar until i transfered data.
i don't know how long this fix will last and i have ordered a new passport drive as a replacement but i have all my data if nothing else.
i hope someone else can benefit from this and i'm glad to have back my pictures

Mate this problem posted months ago.

And " Lol noob " doesn't seems to be a solution either.
If you have an idea to share with people or even any helpful solution will be great full to post them so you could help other peoples as well.
For the mean time. Go play Runescape and drink some milk and do some useful things.

The cause of this problem is that you're using an custom version of Windows OS.
Cause most of the custom OS deletes the drivers files and replace them with themes and useless stuffs so it could be burnt into CD since there isn't enough space for it.

Please try to re-install you're OS. or to make sure the External HDD working try to plug it into another PC before doing that.

Externals can be a pain. Mainly because of their casings that can cause failures to happen for no apparent reason. If your warranty will be expired and/or the drive is not showing in "Computer Management - Disk Management" I would suggest removing the casing from the external and plugging the hard drive you've extracted from the case into a desktop.

If the drive is still not recognized after being installed into a desktop I would look into data recovery. My personal favorite data recovery software is Knoppix which is an OS(linux) booted from disk.

If zcomputerwiz solutions don't work, then remove the disk from the chassis, and install it into any desktop PC. It should show up as a regular harddisk, and you will be able to access your data. I have successfully done this with my WD MyBook Extreme Edition that had stopped being recognized by my desktop and laptop. Now its a regular drive in my desktop PC without the use of any special savior software. Good Fixin!!!

I installed a new WD Cavier 500 Gb hasr drive ot

Your problem could be that the hard disk is not ACTIVE.
Boot up with a DOS disk (floppy or CD or USB) and run FDISK, select 4 to Display Partition Info. If the C drive does not have A under Status then press ESC and select 2 to Set active partition and then set Partition C to active.

WD HD Media player damaged my hard drive??

Hi Dear! This problem could be solved through a software. You should use Western Digital Disk Manager, your WD hard disk will work properly after using that your WD hard disk pass all test of the software. When it will pass all test it will work properly and in other condition if it will not pass then you should try again so that the software will fix the error and it will made workable.
Thank You

The poewr supplies are horrible in this brand, I had to remove two WD drives from the external cases and install them internally to access the data, even when the fan and lights would come on. try to test the drive internally in a desktop, and then you can back up the contents as well
