Question about Western Digital My Book Premium ES Edition WDG1SU5000 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive
Hello.. i bought this
WD 500 GB Exetrnal Hard disk USB2.0 few days ago.. USB2.0
And im faceing a problem installing it.. it should install by it self when connecting to the PC as they said...
But when i connect it some times says " Uknown Device" Some times "Pritning Support" and im using windows XP.. i had VISTA... but i formated to Windows XP cause they said it will work on XP... i thought that was the problem...
When i get in the BIOS page.. and selecting a boot device.. i can see the
WD Exetrnal Hard disk ...
Any ideas ?..
I had this problem. After a year my WD5000H1U-00 just stopped working. Made funny clicking sounds. Would spin up then spin down endlessly. Computer stopped recognizing it altogether. I tried everything. Here is what I finally had to do. The solution isn't pretty but it is effective and probably the only thing you can do really. Open the casing, take out the hard drive. Unscrew and remove the little part that acts as a connecting conduit. There's your problem. Toss it.
Go to a computer parts store and ask for an SATA to USB 2.0 cable. They are about $25.00. Plug that in to your hard drive where you unplugged the power and connectivity conduits. It should power up and work just fine. You can either move all the information onto another hard drive with a pretty casing or you can leave it the way that it is. It will still work the same, just won't look as nice on your desk.

Lots of posts on this on other boards -- I was looking for output voltage of AC adapters as they are not labeled WD and had mixed multiples from other devices in one box while moving-- -- found that answer -- BUT I also saw several people whose drive stopped working suddenly. One got a tip from WD support to unplug adaptor from power strip and into wall socket directly -- This seemed to have solved this for many. Being a study of electrical and electronics I have a suspicion that the current capacity of the strip plug cord wires or strip internals are being overloaded. This will cause a drop in voltage out of the power supply itself, thus low voltage to the drive. One individual re-created the problem by again going back to a loaded strip. No guarantees but worth a try!!

Okay i had my book completely malfunction i have the WD5000h1u-00
i use it as a back up but i recently downloaded too much and filled up my primary harddrive so i used it as my primary store for pictures etc...
well obviously it broke and i had no way to get my data.
after looking online and finding no real answer i tried a series of things whilst possibly co-incidental and maybe with redundant steps it still resulted in a fix.
basically i took apart the harddrive with this model there is no lock, no screw and no easy release but if you use a screwdrive and run it along the edge of the case you can pop all the glue and a bit of plastic but really do minimal damage, mine has no aestetic marks,
i then removed all the parts down to the board that needs the 6 pin screwdriver and put the thing back together being careful to ensure everything was connected.
then i plugged it in to the power and the usb and restarted my laptop
on the reboot it works, don't rely on the lights though as mine just had a solid blue bar until i transfered data.
i don't know how long this fix will last and i have ordered a new passport drive as a replacement but i have all my data if nothing else.
i hope someone else can benefit from this and i'm glad to have back my pictures

Mate this problem posted months ago.
And " Lol noob " doesn't seems to be a solution either.
If you have an idea to share with people or even any helpful solution will be great full to post them so you could help other peoples as well.
For the mean time. Go play Runescape and drink some milk and do some useful things.
The cause of this problem is that you're using an custom version of Windows OS.
Cause most of the custom OS deletes the drivers files and replace them with themes and useless stuffs so it could be burnt into CD since there isn't enough space for it.
Please try to re-install you're OS. or to make sure the External HDD working try to plug it into another PC before doing that.
