Your going to have to reinstall your xp. If you don't have a cd you can take the laptop to a local pc repair / shop.

Well you can backup the system simply with the system state. However some files will be ignored. So what you have to do is to "Clone" the disk. That is the easiest way. Most of the Disk Cloning Software are commercial and not for free. But there are a few. You can use this product. This runs on Windows (win32). XX CLONE.
Download and install it. It has a Graphical User Interface with the necessary options. The image is bootable by default. It is fairly easy to get used with. Just plugin the HDD and back it up. Make sure you properly set the SATA as a slave. These settings can be accessed via boot options in BIOS. Use del,esc,F2 or F11 to jump in to BIOS settings before the system boots Windows. Hope you know the procedure. (Otherwise the System will be boot using the SATA drive instead of the IDE drive). Online manual for XXCLONE.
If you have any commercial product such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image you can use with a hassle. They are ideal for disk imaging. You have to purchase a key how ever. If you use a torrent downloader such as Utorrent, you can download with a key. But you cannot Register the key since they are used keys. So if you like to do that (we do not enforce piracy) download and use one of them. They are user friendly software and easy to coop with.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Please rate the answer if it helps you to solve the issue.
Thanks for contacting Fixya!

You may need to address the way that the old HDD was used in the BIOS. Meaning that if you had regular IDE drive the setting that may be in the BIOS might need to bee disabled and that could be the cause to the new SATA IDE controller you have installed as a boot device. Also if you are trying to boot from you new SATA drive you will need to install some form of and operating system on it like windows or whatever you have been using.

Sometimes it’s easier to create a disk image of the old drive and transfer it to you new SATA, using a disk image utility like Norton Ghost.

Of course I am assuming that you are using a PC and not a MAC.

Don't know how to restore files from backup done with North Ghost

Using Norton Ghost 9.0 is very good program to backup your System & Documents.
You said the PC is dead then you want to restore back your System to a new PC.
All you have to do is that Norton Ghost 9.0 CD is Bootable.
Of course also your external hard drive are plug in it too.
Manually you're going to open that Sv2i file to restore back again your old system but there are some programs that are not going to use. Like for example: System Drivers (Motherboard Driver, LAN, SOUND, etc.) but at least you have the Documents and the rest of the programs run again.
I try it myself this kind of situation, I'm using Windows 2000 with Norton Ghost 9.0 version, and it's 100% works. Good luck!
Hope i might give you some tip & idea.
Tell me more about if you got a problem.
Please rate me.
Thank you.

Ibm thinkpad T40 Hard Drive change out

After fdisk and format you need to ensure that operative system is installed into yor hard drive. Using ghost you restore the image disk by booting from ghost image CD if you made a bootable image disk. Ensure Bios is set up to boot from CD.
If you used Norton Ghost ensure you captured the image of full bootable original hard disk drive for same computer. If it does not boot after restoring ghosted image, than the image it is probably not complete. If hard disk image is not good, easiest thing to do is using Windows install CD to installl again operative system, then you eventually restore ghost image.

RELOAD PROBLEMS

I'm not sure why they do the things they do, but they don't seem to put all the drivers on their restore disc. Here's what you should do. Since your old hard drive is still good, purchase a usb to ide/sata cable, ide or sata depending on which your hard drive is. This will allow you to hook up your old hard drive to your computer as a slave drive. This is going to help you in two ways 1- the drivers for your machine are still on that drive and you can have the hardware wizard find them there, and 2- you can use the old drive for storage, backup, or whatever.

Duel boot system first xp then vista

Wow....

First I would check the BIOS settings. Make sure that the slave and master jumpers are correct on the drives.

Wouldn't it be easier to make one drive Windows XP on one drive while running Vista on the other?

It would make things easier to troubleshoot.

Sata Drive instalation

Hi, go into setup at boot [press delete key ] enable SATA drive here, this will set the Sata as primary master device, leave your old IDE drive as secondary master and I reccomend you set the 3rd drive as slave to your CD/DVD drive.
You may also like to clone the old IDE drive to the Sata drive, this way you will not need to reload all your programs and data, Acronis true image or norton ghost are both good programs are ideal for this.
