The hard drive on my Gateway 505GR died so I purchased a new one. I have the Restore DVD but I cannot figure out how to reload the operating system. It takes me to a screen where it asks me to confirm the Windows XP installation. After confirming, it asks something about a file for Norton Ghost on Drive A: which I answer "NO". After a few seconds the computer says to remove the DVD and restart the computer. When I do this, the computer restarts but then asks me for a bootable drive. Any help on getting the operating system to load on my new hard drive? Thanks.

Try to help get my sister's notebook running....when you turn it on it immediately goes into Startup Repair which fails (cannot repair automatically). When I "view problem details" the one...

Sound like there is a problem with the hard drive itself. If its just corrupt data, it can be formatted and reloaded.
Visit the laptop manufacturers web site and find the support area where you may be able to purchase full System restore cd / dvd s to reload the windows.

If you do this and the reload fails, then it indicates the hard drive is physically damaged and should be replaced.

How do I enable the drives on my Gateway 505GR?

Enter BIOS SETUP.
Change the "boot order" to put the CD/DVD drive as the _first_ boot-device.
Save/Exit, insert the CD-ROM containing the Operating System, and your computer should boot from the files on the CD-ROM.

How do I access the hidden partition to reinstall operating system?

Turn on or restart your notebook, then press F11 while your notebook is
starting.
3 Insert the Operating System Recovery CD/DVD when prompted. The System
Recovery program starts.
Click a system recovery option
Full System Restore (Destructive) reformats the hard drive and
restores the system software as it was when you purchased your
notebook. This process deletes your data files.
Full System Restore with Backup (recommended) moves the
contents of the hard drive to the C:\My Backup folder and installs
a new copy of Windows XP. This option saves your existing data
files, but all programs must be reinstalled and the program settings
reconfigured. You need at least 4 GB of hard drive space to use this
restore option.
5 Click Next. The System Restore - Format and Recover dialog box opens.
6 Click Yes. Files are restored to your hard drive. When file recovery has
finished, the System Restore dialog box opens.
7 Click Restart. Your notebook restarts, and Windows finishes its setup and
installation.
Important
After you restore your system, it will
appear with the same files and programs
it had when it shipped from the factory.
You still need to download Windows
updates and antivirus updates to bring
your notebook’s software up to date.
8 Reconnect your Internet cable and all USB peripheral devices. You are
done.

I had a virus so I loaded the restore disk. It erased the hard drive but now Windows won't boot because the hal.dll is bad or missing.

make sure when you load up off of the windows cd that you allow the operating system to wipe out the hard drive and then after that let it install. This way you make sure the hard drive is cleared out off all viruses and it can install without anything interfering.

If you did this and it still is coming up with a dll file missing then I would suggest trying another hard drive in the computer cause that means your hard drive has bad sectors on it.

The drive for Gateway 500XL needs to be replaced.

1.The price you will pay depends on the size of the harddrive you install.
2. You can buy a 80gigabyte hard drive for 45 bucks up to a 1.5+ terrabyte size for $150+
3. What is the size hard drive are you replacing and was it enough for what you are doing or do you need more space than you had?
4. Whatever hard drive you install will be empty when you get it, therefore you need to use the recovery or operating system disks that came with your computer or buy a new operating system disk.
5. The new hard drive will also have to be partitioned and formatted, this typically is done by the operating system installation at the beginning, just follow the prompts.
6. Once you install the operating system , you will have to load any drivers for your motherboard , addin cards , printer , etc.
7. then comes all the updates , start with windows updates, then install your virus protection, spyware blockers , etc.
8, now download and install all the little things like adobe reader, flash player, java, etc.

I use tigerdirect.com for 99% of my computer hardware, they usually have the best prices for hard drives, are reliable, and have good support.

Unfortunately your going to have to pay someone to do this unless you can do it yourself. it's really not difficult, just takes some time and planning and a good internet connection on a second computer.

Hope this helps out.. Regards

RELOAD PROBLEMS

I'm not sure why they do the things they do, but they don't seem to put all the drivers on their restore disc. Here's what you should do. Since your old hard drive is still good, purchase a usb to ide/sata cable, ide or sata depending on which your hard drive is. This will allow you to hook up your old hard drive to your computer as a slave drive. This is going to help you in two ways 1- the drivers for your machine are still on that drive and you can have the hardware wizard find them there, and 2- you can use the old drive for storage, backup, or whatever.
