The computer does not reconize the camcorder

The first step you have to take to connect your camera to your computer is to ensure that you have installed the software that came with your camera on your computer. You should insert the CD into your computer's drive and the installation screen should load automatically. If it doesn't, you should open the drive's icon that the CD is in, then double click PICTURE PACKAGE. When the menu opens up you should then choose INSTALL. It should install the First Step Guide. Once the install is finished, and you click the NEXT arrow, you should be shown a screen that will allow you to install the ImageMixer VCD2. When that is complete the software might ask you if you want to install the Microsoft Direct X software. This may not show up if you already have that software installed. Chances are if anyone plays any games on your computer that software will already be installed. If not you can click the Install button for the Direct X package. If the system finds a newer version already installed it will display a message to that effect. If not, then it will install their version.

After all of the programs are installed a window will come up asking you to restart your computer. Go ahead and do so. Once your desktop is loaded back up, you should see icons on the desktop for Picture Package Menu and Picture Package Destination folder, as well as an icon for the First Step Guide. Now you should be able to connect your camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable. If you make the connection, and the computer does not recognize the camera do the following:

1) Disconnect and re-connect the cable at both the camera and computer end.

2) Disconnect all other USB devices from your computer, but leave your keyboard and mouse connected. Reboot the computer and once the desktop is loaded try and connect the camera again.

3) If you have more than one USB connection free on the computer try and use all of the other connections until one works.

If none of the above steps work then you will have to try and re-install your USB drivers from the supplied CD. To do so you will have to first delete the drivers that exist. Follow these steps carefully to do so:

1) Make sure your camera is connected to your computer.

2) Right Click My Computer and choose Properties.

2) When the System Properties window appears choose the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button, then choose the View menu and make sure Devices by type has a black dot beside it.

3) Find the following devices in the folder names beside them. You will right click them and choose Uninstall. This will delete them from your computer. The devices are
A) USB Composite Device in the Universal Serial Bus Controller folder.
B) USB Audio Device in the Sound, video, and game controller folder.
C) USB Device in the Other devices folder.

The system will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall those items. Confirm them. Once they have all been uninstalled follow the steps given in the first part of this answer to install all of the necessary programs that came on the CD with your camera.

If you are still having problems getting the computer to recognize your camera after all of this then there maybe a hardware problem with either the camera or your computer. An easy way to check this would be to try another USB device in the port that you are trying to connect your camera to. If the device works then either your camera, or the cable you are using may be defective. You would have to take your camera and cable to a Sony store to have them check them out.
If the device doesn't work then there maybe an issue with your USB ports on the computer. If you are familiar with the BIOS of your computer you can check it to see if the USB ports are turned on and if they are displaying any error messages. If you are not familiar with the BIOS on your computer then you will have to take into your local shop and have them test *********** board out.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you in resolving your issue. Should you need further information or assistance please do not hesitate to let us know.

I cannot get the computer to recognize that I have a camcorder install? I wiould like to use my camcorder to work on my laptop and I cannot get the computer to work with the camcorder.

Make sure that the software/driver of your camcorder is installed on your computer. The driver is included in the package with your camcorder. If it's already installed, try using other USB ports on your computer. If that fails, try hooking other devices that use USB ports on your computer, and see it that work. If other devices work w/ the USB, check the USB cable of the camcorder, then try to see if there is a setup on the camcorder that indicates "connect to computer", some camcorders have this. If all else fail, contact your manufacturer.

Can't get my computer to recognize the device

You may use different USB ports. Make sure your computer USB is v2.0 Computer's Bios and Chipset update could be a possible solution. You may also try Firewire/1394 Connection which is more reliable and faster for video editing and conversion.

Usually in professional use hook up the Camcorder directly to the computer is not very preferred, Using DV converters are more common such as Canopus products as you can find them on

Exporting video

ok, this is only a PC experience(via USB) but it may be the issue you face:

importing video has one catch with this camera---always have to remind myself:

you have to set the camera to playback mode (pretty normal, only use PC mode to get still photos off the SD card)

but before you hook up here's the catch:

go into the menu, setup screen on the camera itself. there you will find you have to choose between something like "act as webcam" or "DV playback". The camera can be a webcam, but it cannot do that and send video to the computer.

this is the setting I always forget---and I don;t even use it as a webcam that often.

hope this helps you too

Uploading Video Problems

Hopefully it's just a usb port voltage problem. If you have other usb peripherals connected, try removing them and conecting your cam again. Secondly try using a different usb port.

Camcorder connection to pc

Firstly ensure you are connecting it into the same USB port as last time, as it will look for drivers if in a different port. Also worth checking to see if another USB device is detected in the same USB port(eg usb pen, dongle, game controller etc),if so the port is ok. If still nothing remove camera and lead. If you still have the software and driver cd that you got with the camera, dig it out. If you have the installation cd, look in Start>Control Panel>Add & Remove Programmes and look for the Sony driver or software in the list. Click on the line and then on right hand side click remove. Insert the cd and re-install drivers or let it autorun, and only connect your camera when instructed to do so; or, after the installation has finished. Hope this works, as the connection between camera and pc is either a lead fault or camera input fault if none of above works.
