The 890 doesn't support iPod control via USB. You can only read plain data storage devices on the USB port, such as a flash drive or portable hard drive. When you plug the iPod in (to a PC or the 890), it doesn't show up as a plain file storage device. Some of the newer Kenwoods do offer direct iPod control via USB. These ones have more "smarts" and are able to properly talk to the iPod and access its music. For the older models, you'll need to buy the special iPod interface, which accesses the iPod like a CD changer.

I bought a used car and it already had a kenwood kdc-x890 installed. my question is when i plug my zune or even just a mp3 player into the usb port it responds with [n/a data].

The KDC-X890 will play MP3s that are stored on a USB mass storage device, such as a USB thumb drive. It won't play music from another MP3 player such as a Zune through the USB port, but you could plug your MP3 player into the auxiliary jack.

How do you hook up an i-pod to a KDC-135 AND HEAR IT?

You will need a 3.5mm mini to mini cable (available at any good car audio store for between $10-20. Plug that into the headphone jack on your ipod and then into the aux input on your stereo. Then select aux-in as the source on your Kenwood. Now play the music on your ipod at about 3/4 volume on the iPod.

I have an Ipod touch but I do not have the optional ipod adapter, is there any way i can still use my ipod with this system?

Yes if you buy the IP-Bus cable and a set of RCA to 3.5mm cable. You can find at a Best Buy or online.
At best buy the IP-Bus will be 29.99 and the RCA to 3.5 is usually 10-15 bucks

I have a kenwood KDC-MP438U stereo. Ipod error.

Hi If anything the stereo was probably designed and tested using a certain version of the Iphones software, now that version 4 has been released the way the IPhone communicates may have changed.

As a result the stereo is no longer able to talk to the phone and vice versa. your probably best off contacting Kenwood direct to see if they are aware of this problem and if there is anything that can be done about it.

My kenwood KDC-MP342U stopped reading my ipod i just got it within the past two weeks and it was working fine and the all of a sudden when i pluggedd my ipod in all it says is reading. i have tried to use...

I had the same problem with my first gen ipod touch. The reset button is on the front panel, between the Fast Forward button and the "1" button. Push it with a pen or something with the unit turned on. It will go dark then come back. You'll have to set up your preamp and other stuff again. I also now push the eject button before removing my ipod or USB thumb drives. The display will flash "remove". I guess this does some handshaking that cleans things up before removal.

Can i hook this up directly to an ipod,or do i have to use one of those radio frequency things?

From what little research I did it does not look like you can connect and Ipod without extra gear. Here is a link to some of the accessories that you can hook up to it:

If It was me, I would just spend the money on a stereo with a usb port. Then you can connect your Ipod directly to the cd player and operate your Ipod playlist with the cd player itself. Plug it in throw your Ipod in a cubby hole and use the cd player.
