Where did you buy it sometime if you got it from places like bestbuy or other places like that some time you can take it back to them and they will replace it no question asked. I beleave they have a 30 day return policy on alot of their items. You have a damaged lens that need to be replaced other wise. I repair these camera all the time for the same issue. Hope this helps.

Cybershot 7.2 - print.gif The lens will not open, retract, or extend.
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if the lens will not open, retract, or extend.
WARNING: There is a risk of hardware damage. Do not attempt to manually force the lens in or out. Doing so may damage the camera.
NOTE: Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the camera status after completing each step.

  1. Ensure the battery is adequately charged or connect the AC power adapter (if applicable).
  2. Perform a power reset.
  3. If the camera lens is still not operating correctly after completing the troubleshooting steps suggested, service will be required.
How to initialize or reset a digital still camera back to factory settings.
Some cameras have a RESET button built into them or a menu option to reset the camera to the default settings. The manuals of some camera models may have instructions on how to initialize the camera, which is another name for resetting the camera to the default or original factory settings. Refer to the instruction manual supplied with your camera for specific information regarding the availability of a RESET button or menu option to initialize or reset the default settings. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.
Otherwise, continue with the manual reset procedure below:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Ensure the camera is not connected to an AC power adapter.
  3. Remove the battery from the camera for 15 seconds.
  4. Reinsert the battery.
  5. Turn on the camera.
NOTE: If the issue is not resolved by performing a reset procedure, service may be required.

Hope this is helful

Hi I slipped in the garage and dropped the camera when it was on==batteries came out and lens of course didn't fully retract. Put batteries back in and the green light comes on and beeps but won't...

Sorry about your moms camera Terry... but it sounds like it needs the lens replaced. If the lens is stuck out at an angle you can *SNAP* the inner lens section back into place if you're lucky, and it will work again like normal.

I don't know your model, but a refurb lens can usually be installed for about $75 including return shipping. You should check the replacement cost of a used camera and see which is cheaper in the long run.

Hope this helps!

Lens is stuck in the out position, it says to turn it off and on again, but that doesn't do anything. Can't take a picture.

The lens has probably got something in the retraction mechanism that is stopping it retracting. This can be something as simple as sand or grit or as a result of a drop or knock. In most cases the camera will need to be stripped apart to remove the lens assy before it can be repaired. This is best left to a professional camera repair shop.

Sony cybershot DSC-W170 lens malfunction

sounds like you have dust, sand of some type stuck in the retracting lense. Ive found someone to tell me to take out my batterys and SD card, then tap the bottom of the camera on a table top. Replace the batteries and power up. Doing this, I was told it loosens up the debri for the lense to retract to close and to open again.

Cannon G7 need help

Hi
Had the same problem a few months ago. There was a high pitchedwhisltle and I think the screen said "lens fault.turn off camera" or something similar.Bought a G9 to replace as the 7 was out of guarantee but sent the 9 back to the e-bay reseller as it was obviously secondhand with grit around the lens ring and the viewfinder.Ebay never again!.So 3 months ago ago I tried the G7 again with a fresh charged battery before I consigned the camera to the loft.I noticed that each time i switched on the whistle and message was there but the lens extended slightly further each timeso I kept rebooting until the lens was fully extended.Turned the camera off and on again and everything was back to normal. It seems that this may be Canons protocol when a camera goes back. Its been absolutely fine until today. It wont boot up at all.I have tried 2 fresh charged batteries and its dead.Any ideas anyone?

Sony Cybershot dsc-p73 dropped

I also dropped this camera from waist high and the lens was stuck out and would not retract or let me do anything. I ended up having it sent to Sony to replace the lens and it cost me $200. I paid $300 for the camera to begin with but to me this was the BEST camera I'd ever had and was worth it. Before repairing it, I bought a new Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 since the original one I had dropped was no longer available. I was NOT pleased with the quality of the new camera at all and it was supposed to be better than the one I dropped. That's when I decided it was worth repairing the broken one and worth the cost.
