Re: Changing the CIS scanner
First remove the scanner control panel. pry the hinges out slightly and you can take off the control panel, then there are 4 or 5 screws and the top comes off. The 2 long rollers come out too. move the clip and slide them to the right. The scanner is the 3/4 inch wide 8 inch long scanner. ( the glass that reads your faxes to send ) It is coonected with a flat cable. It pops up when you push the clips holding it down. Lawrence
Be sure to lightly pull the are, move the CIS(scanner) to the right and lift up the lift edge of the CIS unit gently. Do not lift the left edge exceeding 30 mm to prevent the CIS harness connector on the CIS unit from getting broken.
While holding the CIS unit, disconnect the CIS harness. The CIS spring comes off also.

B9 Light emission intensity error of the LED array . Check CIS unit (scanner device) or check main PCB . According the error either one of these units can be faulty or a lose connection but getting to these would require you take apart most of your fax machine . Maybe it's time to purchase a new fax machine .
CIS SCANNER SEEMS TO BE BAD TRY CIS TRAINING FUNCTION IN THE MAINTENANCE MODE AND DO CIS TRAINING USING A PLAIN WHITE SHEET/(FUNCTION *2864 , USE 55 CODE TO DO THE CIS TRAINING)
OTHERWISE REOPLACE CIS SCANNER.
We had the same problem on outgoing faxes or copies, but not on "Help" pages printed from the device, or on incoming faxes. That made us suspect first the scanning glass had dirt or white-out on it - but even after we cleaned the bits of dirt from it, we still had black lines. So next we suspected the scanner lamp. To test it, we started a copy and in the middle of its pulling a page through the ADF, we popped open the ADF a bit to see there was a section of the scanner lamp burned out when it lit up. It matched our black line perfectly.
At the suggestion of a FixYa member, we purchased a Brother CIS Unit, part #LE7949001 from Vance Baldwin Electronics and followed the advice of another FixYa member on replacing the CIS unit. We have a full light on the scanner lamp now, with no black stripes or lines on the outgoing faxes or copies. Thank you FixYa for this forum, and thank you to those who share their knowledge with the rest of us.
There are two possible solutions. Is the machine sitting on top of metal? The machine will send black pages when there is static charge. You can put a rubber mat under the machine or use a static guard.
The second solution is to put the machine in maintenance and reset the scanner. Unplug the machine, put your finger on the menu key first and then re-plug the line while holding the menu key, in about 30 seconds all the lights will flash and the display will say maintenance. Release the menu Key and press 55 and this will reset the scanner; if scanner error comes up the machine will need to be serviced. Press stop and then 99 this will exit you out of maintenance. If the machine does not have an error try making a copy of blank sheet of paper and see if there is any improvement. As a routine clean the scanner glass with soft lint free cloth and isopropyl alcohol also.
