The browser is a weak link in the security structure of most systems. Even with virus scanners and internet security firewalls they are still the weak link because of the design considerations that allow them to do so much. While it may not solve the issue running a virus, spyware , adware scans would not be a bad idea in this case.
Online scanners such as those identified below can provide valuable second opinions on occasion.
Sites like Trend Micro, Panda, Symantec and others have online
scanners that remove viruses. You might want to start with Internet Explorer and
www.f-secure.com and search for online scanner -- I believe the
first link returned is the online scanner. They have a beta version for Vista
and either the beta or the version on the page works for WIndows XP. You can
click a start scanning at the bottom of the page for which ever version you use
Beta or not.

When it is done which will take a while -- you
will be given the option to remove any malware it finds.

companies above have similar options on their web sites.
There are several free scanners that look got adware and the like.
www.lavasoft.com has both a free and commercial product -- the free product requires you to scan your own machine perioducally.
