My graphics driver keeps shutting down

I receive a message stating that my graphics driver, R300, had to recover when I run Windows Vista Aero and watch videos in full screen. I tried uninstalling drivers and restarting the computer to download new drivers but the problem is still there.

Make sure u have the correct amount of ram allocated to your internal video card thru your bios settings download your owners manual from gateway to get to your bios and set back to setup defaults should be F2 F6 F10. and another issue could be your recovery cd is outdateded.. u might have updated your bios firmware so now your motherboard chipset firmware that is on your restore disk is causing a irq failure

Hi,

Go to device manager and uninstall it, sounds like corrupted drivers. Click on it and uninstall, if prompted "Delete installed device drivers" put tick in the box and proceed.

Now reboot...new drivers will be re-installed when you login to vista.

Thanks

First check the System requirements The following list describes the recommended minimum hardware requirements for basic functionality of the different editions of Windows Vista. Actual hardware requirements vary, depending on system configuration and on the programs and the features that you install. If you install Windows Vista over a network, additional hard disk space may be required.

Windows Vista Home Basic

Note On system configurations that use system memory as graphics memory, at least 448 MB of system memory must be available to the operating system after some memory is allocated for graphics.
  • DirectX 9-class graphics card
  • 32 MB of graphics memory
  • 20-gigabyte (GB) hard disk that has 15 GB of free hard disk space
  • Internal or external DVD drive
  • Internet access capability
  • Audio output capability

Geforce 8600 gts drivers crash and recover moments later

Sorry for the bad news, but you've seem to have witnessed a graphic card meltdown...

During games, cards get quite melting hot! If there's a little problem or inefficiency in the card cooling system (Active Fan or Passive Airflow) Your card will simply melt a few little contacts, enough to produce what you saw or even worse!. (Basically just in the graphic 3D render portion of the board, thats why you could still see windows some times but Aero (3D) started glitching later).

If you wish, you can verify this at your own risk opening up your case and placing your finger on the free corner of your card and bending/arching it a little to the sides when windows or your games are running... It may restore contact at the melted away points for a few seconds for you to see, but won't repair it, you'll maybe see how images get better or worse with the bending, proving the meltdown situation.

Return your card if you can or buy a new one, before the crashes mess up your windows. Buy a new one from a good manufacturer and clad with an elaborated cooling system, if you plan to run 3D heavy games, stay away from the weird branded, cheapest or heavily discounted cards are usually the ones most prone to fail this way. If you go ATI, buy ATI made cards. If you go NVidia, buy BFG for example.
