I'm thinking of upgrading the hard drive on this machine and I was wondering what, if any, limitations I have on capacity and/or speed- what can this computer handle? Also, I am unsure about the interface- is it Ultra ATA or IDE? Or are they the same? Thanks so much for your help! Sincerely,

You cannot get the full 320Gb capacity because the BIOS can only support a maximum of 127Gb. You only hope is a BIOS firmware upgrade that can support 320Gb. Check out the Acer WEB site to see if a BIOS upgrade will solve your problem. OTHERWISE Install a 127Gb hard drive in your Acer and put the 320Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive because it is not affected by the BIOS limitation.
Your pc can accept any 3.25" hard drive and can take up to a 500GB capacity. Also, the specs would be IDE 3.25" (3 1/2) ATA Hard drive. Brand name is totally up to you.
To upgrade your laptop, you will have to verify the capacity for upgrade of your laptop.
The Acer Travelmate comes with:
Intel Celeron-M 360 Processor 1.4GHz
256MB DDR SDRAM -
40GB Hard Drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive - To read DVDs and CDs and write CDs
15" XGA TFT Screen
Intel 852GM 64MB shared graphics
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition
Based on this information, you can upgrade your memory depending on what type of memory your motherboard supports and how many empty slots for memory does your laptop have.
The hard drive can be upgraded also depending on which hard drives does the BIOS will recognize.
I will suggest to contact ACER and ask for the options and upgrades capacity.
God Bless You!!!
Hope it helps.

Hard Disk Upgrade
Can I upgrade or install a larger hard disk drive in my Viewer?
The P-5000 includes an internal 80GB hard drive which is specifically designed to work with this product. There are no hard drive upgrades available for this product. If you try to install another hard drive, it may damage or adversely affect the operation of the product. This type of damage or operational failure is not covered by the product's warranty.
Yes, there is. Match the type of drive (Serial ATA or Parallel ATA) you get with what you have. Make sure your Satellite sees the drive in the BIOS. For drives larger than 120 GB, recommend operating systems Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or higher) or Vista. Older OS's have a 137 GB limitation (they only see the first 137 GB of the hard drive despite its size).
hi there, you Dell Latitude D610 can support large hard drives from 100gigs up to 250gigs ... but i very much think this is the limitation of your system bios if u are looking to go higer ... u might need to upgrade your system bios.....
Hi,
Your basically correct, the only requirement is to physically fit the enclosure (2.5inch), other than that, hard disk capacity is a matter of your personal preference/need;
Toshiba is one of the better brands. Others are Seagate, Maxtor to name a few. I guess it's a matter of who can provide better after sales support.
Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information.
Good luck and kind regards.
