I live in the city of Vancouver WA. It sometimes takes 5 minutes or more to locate a satelite. I have owned a Garmin-Nuvi 205 before and it always located a satelite immediatley. In fact, when I first purchased this unit three month ago there was no satelite problem. How can I fix this problem? John

How to Perform a Hard Reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W

Does your Garmin Nuvi 205 or 205W Freeze at Loading Maps?
Does it lock up or stop working?

This tip will describe how to perform a hard reset of the device, and how to backup your 'Favorites' in case the hard reset erases them. The next step in fixing your Nuvi when it doesn't start properly is to update its system software using Garmin WebUpdater.

A hard reset (or Clear All User Data)has been known to resolve unit quirks and strange behavior after firmware updates. It's generally recommended to perform it after a firmware update but is not required by any means. However, if you're seeing quirks and strange behavior with your unit after the firmware update, it is a good idea to do a hard reset of the unit. It's also one of the first things that Garmin will have you do when contact tech support regarding quirky unit behavior.

Backup and Restoration Procedure for Favorites:

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will beread from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on theNuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

You have now performed a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 205 and 205W.

I hope that helps.

First time using my garmin 205W and it only holds satelite service for about 10 minutes

I recommend you replace the firmware and system software using webupdate. Updates in the Nuvi 205 firmware has increased its satellite reception and accuracy.

I hope that helps.

Good morning Vickie. With a device this new, I would suggest you have a conversation with the Garmin folks, e-mail or on the telephone. Here is the link: http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us click on support and make your choice.

I don't think you can repair this yourself.

Give this a try.

To Delete/Change your “Home” location, you can go to favorites, tap on home, tap edit, and then tap on "Delete" which will allow you to reset the location in the original dialog. Just tap the Home button again from the favorites menu, and the Nuvi will walk you through the dialog again.

Can not find a screen with several satelites on my Nuvi 205.

I found someone on your home page that had a similar problem. All that was required was to hold down the satelite bars icon for from 5-8 sec.

Thank you for your help.

Satelite search takes forever

Hello bertvanjbert,

In order for your GPS to calculate its own location, it needs to receive data reports from four or more GPS satellites. This process is normally pretty fast. However, this assumes that the GPS has a clear view of the sky.

Obstructions such as tall buildings, trees and local terrain such as mountains and hills can affect your receiver's ability to "see" the sky. This is also true of GPS units used indoors or inside of a vehicle.

A GPS receiver without a clear view of the sky can take a long time to get a fix on its own location. The process can also take additional time if the GPS has been powered off for an extended period of time or if you have travelled a long distance (greater then 500 miles) since it was last turned on.

Hope this helps!

Garmin nuvi 200w map update 2009

Delete all the vehicles and voices that you don't use as well.

Btw, beware that the "City Navigator Lower 49 States+PR NT 2010.10, Deluxe, Apr 09" for nuvi 200/205 is BUSTED, it probably will not work (I just spent 2+hrs on the phone with garmin tech support to fix it.) Search these forums for "nuvi 205 no detailed maps" for more details.
