The nuvi thinks you've connected it to the USB port of your home computer. It's charging, so pay no attention to the screen.

If you HAD connected it to the USB port, you would also see the nuvi as a storage device attached to your computer. That's how you can download pictures that you can display on your nuvi. It's also the mechanism used when you update your maps and/or software.

Garmin says low battery and now will not work in the car. Does this Garmin have a battery inside the unit that I have to replace?

There is a battery in the satnav but it's not user replaceable. It can only be replaced by returning it to Garmin. Before sending it away to replace the battery you could check the following;

  • Have you the satnav connected to the charger?
  • If it's connected to the charger is the cigarette lighter socket working. You can check by plugging in another device to see if it works
  • If the cigarette lighter socket is working and the battery of the satnav is not charging it's possible that the fuse in the plug, that goes into the cigarette lighter socket, is blown.
To change the fuse;
Unscrew the ring that's at the end of the plug and the plug comes apart. Be careful not to lose the silver coloured tip. When the plug comes apart you can take out the fuse and get a replacement at any car accessory shop or a shop that sells garmin satnavs.

If you have to return your satnav to garmin you can find their contact details at http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/home/support/supportcontact

My garmin nuvi 200 when plug into car goes into mass storage mode. have the right charger.

This can happen sometimes due to wear on the mini USB socket at the back of the satnav. The plug appears to be fully in but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.

I need to buy a plug for car . It is not charging tne GPS

You can get accessories including the car charger from http://www.gpsnow.com/Garmin_nuvi_255_Accessories.htm
However it's likely that if the car charger is not working that the fuse is blown. The fuse is in the plug that goes in the cigarette lighter socket. To get at it unscrew the ring at the end of the plug. Be careful not to lose the small metal tip. When you unscrew the ring the plug comes apart and you'll see the fuse. You can get replacement fuses at any shop that sells garmin satnavs or car electrical accessory shops.

Before changing the fuse make sure your cigarette lighter socket is working by testing it with the cigarettel lighter or some other accessory.

When I plug the gps into the charger a computer picture shows up and I can't get it on any other screen. What's the matter?

Did you recently purchase that charger?

This usually happens when the charger is not compatible with the unit. or you could be using a non-Garmin charger. There are some "store-brand" chargers that work well, and some do not. Store brand Charger are made to be Universal. To fit multiple devices and maximize profits. You want a Garmin Specific Charger, and here is the logic why...

The reason behind it:

1. The Garmin USB Cable that you connect to your computer has a special 4-pin configuration telling the GPS that is is connected to a computer. This is the configuration most "generic" chargers use to maximize device compatibility.

2. The Garmin Car Charger has a different pin configuration with 2 less pins, giving it only positive ( + ) and Negative ( - ) to charge the GPS.

When the GPS receives the 4 pin, which is also found in a "Motorola" Cell phone charger, it will automatically sense that it is connected to a computer.

Long winded, but I wanted to explain why. Simple fix, Just go get a new charger and make sure it's Garmin compatible.

It could be a problem with the mini USB plug on the charger. If it doesn't go in far enough it will cause that problem. Try pushing it in further. If that doesn't work you'll need to get a Garmin power cord.

Hello. I have a Garmin Nuvi level 200. The car charger was damaged so I have purchased two at two separate stores. Neither works. When you plug it into the car charger, an icon showing "garmin connected...

The problem is not the power lead. It's the socket on the back of the satnav. Due to wear when you plug in the mini usb plug it feels as if it's fully in but it's not. Push it in further and it'll work ok.

Garmin Nuvi is plugged into the electrical outlet in my car. It appears that it is not having a good electrical connection because nothing comes up on the screen like it is charging. Unsure if it is dead,...

If the lighter socket is working ok then it may be the fuse in the charger plug that's gone. It can be replaced by unscrewing the silver ring at the end of the plug and removing the fuse. A replacement fuse should be available from garmin dealers.

Has been working fine..now will not turn on.

It sounds like a dead battery?
When it is plugged into the car, you should see a charging symbol, or it will say charging if the screen is off.
Are you sure it is getting power from the car? Check the fuse for the lighter socket, also the power cord has a fuse in the end that goes into the cigarette lighter socket, if you twist the end of the adapter it should open and expose a fuse.
Check these fuses to be sure.

Hope this helps.
