My computer won't send anything to the printer. It was installed weeks ago and was working fine up until today. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable, but the message 'USB device not recognised' keeps popping up.

try turning off the printer, if it still won't uninstall, boot the computer in safemode (hold down f8 when you turn it on untill you see the boot menu) and try to uninstall it then. just in case, the latest version of your driver is available here: http://downloads.lexmark.com/perl/downloads/downloads.cgi
What we surmised is that the little wire contacts on the print cartridge were bad. One suggestion was to use a pencil eraser over the area where the small wire dots are on the cartridge, then wipe clean with a lint free cloth. That didn't work either so I exchanged the cartridge and the problem went away.
With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the
driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into
the USB port until told to do so.
To fix a fouled install : (1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
(2) Shutdown the computer
(3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
(4) Restart the computer
(5) Run the Driver Installation software
(6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
(7) When the sofware asks for the printer connect it and continue
