GE refrigerator issue

My GE fridge's top freezer only gets cold now in on corner of the freezer where the wires and tubes connect up to it. I thought it was due to something being frozen and causing a blockage, so I left it off for over a week in my shop with heat and the doors open. I even put pots of hot water in the freezer but it is still the same. I have look up the various parts for the fridge and I'm pretty handy, I just dont have knowledge of the refrigerator systems.. seems like a waste to toss, but it is at least 10 years old. I see used refrigerators on Craig's list for around $100 but that is always a gamble. is this worth fixing, should I try for another used one.. got this one used, or buy new... its a small frigerator in my workshop. I recently read about cleaning coils, something I have never done and the shop is dusty and the shop only has heat and ac when I use it... I'm in Raleigh NC. thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

Compressor is not running and pumping the freon effectively.
take and blow the coils clean with a air compressor or use a coil brush. If that doesn't take care of it you may have a compressor problem that is not worth repairing on a 10 yr old refrigerator.

Dirty coils could be on problem. Just take a vacuum ans **** all the dust and debris off the coils. Second, do you hear the fan running in the freezer compartment? Do you feel air coming out of the vents in the freezer compartment? If not that could be your problem also. If both of those things do not fix your problem, you may have a leak in your freon system. The easiest way to chech is look at your joints(usually happens by the compressor) and see if there are any "oil" spots. If this is the case, you are better off getting a new one.

It's probably a faulty defrosting clock. I did see this type of problem caused by a faulty 'ground' connection at the wall outlet. Appliances often use the earth ground present in residential wiring systems as the neutral conductor for the internal appliance circuits.

So, if there are NOT all three prongs on the wall plug (people often cut them off), that could cause problems. But usually it's ice build-up inside the divider between the fridge and freezer, or the refrigeration coils are sometimes sealed in the top of the base.

You can look for bulging spots inside the unit. Or, unplug it and see if you get water on the floor.

The condenser, usually on the back of the unit (black tubing and wires, may be obstructed. If that can't get proper airflow, neither side of the unit will cool properly.

GE TFX26KRDA WW 2001 side by side refrig/freezer w warm fridge

Cleaned the condenser coils which were dusty but not severely so. Checked the evaporator coils which were NOT iced. Reset the fridge to coldest setting and freezer to #5 (mid range of temperature) and waited a full 36 hours. Fridge temp is 40 F and freezer is about 0F. Not sure what is different except coldest setting on fridge. Warm weather is here but not warm enough to require AC. Temps in late afternoon in house about 77-80F. Any thoughts are appreciated because I suspect this problem is not completely resolved.

Admiral SAC224 fridge freezer: fridge intermittently freezes up

To Whiteorchid,

Found a fix for my issue ... hopefully it'll help you.
Up at the topleft rearmost corner of the fridge remove panel to reveal spring attached slots where cold is supplied from freezer. The spring attached had came off one end as there isn't a "slot" for the spring to hold in place (design fault?).Reattached the spring and taped on .... and hey presto fridge now working perfectly again. Hope this helps.

GE Side By side doesn't cool and freexer frosts up

Most common problem on GE's is the defrost heater(s) has gone bad. They are a glass tube and when they go bad the tube will have a burnt or black color to it. A good heater will be clear. I bet that is your problem. Seems to be the problem about 90% of the time on GE not defrosting.
