All of a sudden the magenta stopped printing. After cleaning multiple (perhaps 10) times, I can get two dashes of magenta in a test print out of the 150 that are supposed to show up. Brother Help says, "must be a mechanical defect, since you're using our print cartridges." As the machine is out of warranty, I'm thinking I could buy a new one for the cost of repair. Any suggestions on how I might proceed before pitching it in the trash?

Brother units are very sensitive when it come to using generic ink. If you have used generic ink you will need to buy Brother ink and run through the cleaning cycle at least 4 times. Print a test sheet, if the color begins to come back, the generic ink is the issue. Generic ink may have damaged the print head also.

My yellow ink is printing black. I have swapped the ink cartridge, and tried running a few test prints, but the yellow is still black and affecting all my colour copies

The driver software for your printer may have been corrupted and should be reinstalled. By Switching the cartridges around you may have contaminated the ink jets which should either eventually self clean. If not you may need to have the unit professionally cleaned try buying a printer cleaner first and see if that works first that should do the trick!:) Hope this is helpful :) Please remember to vote Thanks

Printer not printing

Unfortunately, like most multi cartridge ink jet printers when one ink is empty the printer will cease printing regardless of whether you just want to print in black and white and you have plenty of black ink left. I have heard of people tricking the printer into believing the cartridge is full by placing coloured tape etc in front of the ink sensing device but I am not sure how the Brother senses the ink levels as i have some aftermarket ink cartridges for mine which seem to be completely non-opaque (unlike the originals). The need to have colour cartridges in even if you only ever print with black ink is good news for Brother as the MFC-210c uses a large amount of ink during it's routine cleaning cycles (that you cant stop) and will empty all 3 cartridges in under 6 months without ever printer a single drop of colour ink. Sorry about all the bad news, at least your not alone......
