This is very dangerous, unfortunately it is also not easy to fix. There is a small switch behind the plastic actuator that is malfunctioning. You will need to remove the shell. You may need special tools (torx, security) to remove the screws at the back around the perimeter. Be certain you have removed power before you do any work. Also be careful when you remove the shell as the edges will be sharp. Hopefully once you remove the shell you can see the switch (look down from above) and determine if you have the skills and tools to perform the tear-down necessary to get to it. It will not be easy to find a replacement unless you have a good parts store in your area. In my experience this kind of failure requires an almost complete tear-down and it may be easier to leave to a local appliance repair shop who will have the parts and experience to not make a pig's breakfast of it.

How do I remove cover on JEM31 microwave

Remove the screws on the back of the cover. There might also be some on the sides. The cover should slide backward and/or upward after the screws are removed.

One of the most common problems like the one you're having & is an inexpensive option to replace is the door switch, replace it and see if that helps. Should be about $10.00. If that doesn't fix your problem, buy a new micro for about $50.00

Jem31 no heat

The problem is in the magnetron or the inverter board if under 7 years old. Cost to repair will be equal if not more than a new microwave oven.

The light on my ge JEM31 microwave works intermittantly. How do I replace/tighten the bulb.

In there models, the cavity light is located in the magnetron cooling duct on the right side of the chassis.

You need to remove the outer cover to access it. See this file and this file for disassembly help.

How to open GE microwave and check fuse?

In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.
