Hi,

A number of possibilities:
1. the files needed to run Windows are either corrupt or missing;
2. driver error particularly with the video card;
3. virus infection;
4. hardware fault.

A temporary remedy is try to boot to Safe Mode by pressing F8 even before the Windows logo appears. On powerup, keep pressing F8 after the BIOS/CMOS display (POST).

Thereafter pls post back if Windows will boot in Safe Mode and we can work out other ways to restore Windows to normal operation.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

this means that the only operating system on the computer is "DOS" if it's an older machine, you will purchase a copy of some form of software such as windows that will be able to run on it. depending on how old the laptop is... flip the laptop over and take a look for a microsoft windows registration sticker. if it has one, whoever sold it to you is legally obliged to give you the copy of windows that it was shipped with... if you do not have a windows sticker. you will need to install a new operating system onto the computer. if either of these is not an option, a person may be able to look into linux, or other free operating system

Bios Error Message

With the system off, open the side cover and re-seat the RAM. You may have one module that is bad.
Second, press F2 as soon as you see the Dell screen and see if you can get into the BIOS setup. Post back with the results please.
Good luck!

Outlook Express changes name of outgoing server to localhost

Find your Host file: in XP is C:WINDOWS / system32 / driversetc / and open it with Notepad:
You get :
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
etc...

remove your outgoing server from the list in this file.
save it again.

Dont have the CD to find my ip address

click on START - RUN - in the text box type CMD (this opens a DOS looking window so you can see the IP address before it flashes out of your sight) - at the command prompt type IPCONFIG
-- this will show you your IP address, it should look something like this:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 6:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : domain.invalid
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.254.1 <-----------YOUR IP----------<<<<<<<
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.254.254

Windows XP SP3 IE v7.0

When you say download do you mean any file you try to download? Have you tried using another browser such as firefox? If you do not have firefox installed I assume you cannot download it to try. If this is the case I would suggest going to a friend or family members computer & downloading it to a thumbdrive or cd then take it home & install it. If you can download from firefox. Then I would uninstall IE V 7 from add remove programs & then re install it. I'm assuming you have tried the usual things like restarting your computer

Try going into bios utility and check to see if there is a HDD enable option. If not, find another pc and burn a bootable bios disc with the original bios.
