I have a maxtor III usb 2.0 500 GB external hard drive. the light on the front goes out and works sometimes. when the light goes out the external drive gets disconnected . i checked for loose connections. but this drive is put in in area where it does not move or get touched. whats is happening to it?

    This problem is now fixed. I took a chance and bought a new AC/DC adaptor and sure enough that was the problem. Hope this helps someone else with the smae problem, but i also want to thank everyone that did answer and tried to help me out. thank you. what a great forum!

Had the same problem with a laptop and maxtor ext hd. Bought a powered U.S.B hub problem solved.Also make sure you format it.

Possibly, the USB is not receiving current enough and occasionally it resets the USB interface. Try connecting it to another system, or to a powered USB host, and see what happens.
Another possibility (but you'd need to disassemble the external enclosure and connect directly the disk inside to a SMART-capable motherboard) is that the hard disk is developing a fault.

You have what is call a USB POWER Y ADAPTER: this is designed to provide extra current to your USB HDD drive from a second PC USB port. Plug the end with two USB connectors to your PC/LAPTOP and the single-ended plug to your drive.

Please Make sure you External Hard disk USB cable is working correctly. Your cable is probably having partial contact, so try another cable

go to my computer proeprty then uninstall usb driver and then right clik any driver then clik on scan for hardware then it searches usb and install automatically.

Maxtor One-Touch 4 750gb power light flashes and goes out straight away.

Try to remove the drive and connect it directly to another computer.
If still doesn't spin up then most likely the board has failed.

detection issues with the maxtor. Although the original one is for Maxtor one touch IV, the solution there should work with the III also..

The drive is dying. If it is still under warranty, call Maxtor for a replacement.
