A WEP key(not WEB) is something that is set up during installation, for security purposes..

To setup your router's wireless security settings:
i. Accessing the web-based setup page

Accessing the web-based setup page

Step 1:
Access the router's web-based setup page by opening a web browser. On the Address bar, enter your router's local IP address then press [Enter].

NOTE: The default IP Address of Linksys routers is "192.168.1.1". For instructions on accessing the web-based setup page using a Mac computer, click here.

Step 2:
When the login prompt appears, enter your router's Username and Password.

NOTE: The default password is "admin" and the Username field is left blank. If you have set a password before but forgot it, you need to reset the device. For instructions on how to reset a Linksys router, click here.

Step 3:
On the Setup page, click the Wireless > Wireless Security.

NOTE: If some of the tabs are missing in the web-based setup page, upgrade the firmware of your router. For instructions, click here. You can also set the wireless security of your Linksys E-Series routers with Cisco Connect. To learn how, click here.

On the Wireless Security sub-tab, there are various wireless security options that you can choose from.

However, as mentioned earlier, the three most commonly used security modes are WEP, WPA Personal (or WPA Pre-Shared Key), and WPA2 Personal. The instructions below will show you how to set up the following security modes. On the other hand, the WPA2/WPA Enterprise Mixed Mode, WPA Enterprise, WPA2 Enterprise, and RADIUS security modes will only work if the router is connected to a RADIUS server.
Setting-Up the Wireless Security



Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)

WEP can be a 64-bit key with 10 hexadecimal digits or a 128-bit key with 26 hexadecimal digits. This encryption will prevent other users from connecting to your wireless network. It will also protect your wireless transmissions from being accessed by other users.

NOTE: In case the screen on your router's web-based setup page looks different, click here.

Step 1:
On Security Mode, select WEP.

Step 2:
Under WEP Encryption, select 40 / 64-bit (10 hex digits) and enter a unique word in the Passphrase field.



NOTE: The 128-bit key uses a higher level of encryption compared to the 64 bit WEP. It uses a 104 bit (26 Hex Character).

Step 3:
Click the Generate button and copy the string of letters and numbers displayed in the space provided for Key 1. The Key 1 contains the wireless password.

NOTE: You can also create your own Wireless Password (Key 1) given that it is in hexadecimal format. The hexadecimal system consists of the characters 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E, and F. You can only choose 10 characters (in any given order) from that set.

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a Wi-Fi standard designed to improve the security features of WEP. WPA is stronger than WEP encryption. PSK and PSK2, the two types of WPA, give you a choice between two encryption methods: the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), which incorporates Message Integrity Code (MIC) to provide protection against hackers, and Advanced Encryption System (AES), which utilizes a symmetric 128-Bit block data encryption.

NOTE: For older versions of Linksys routers, WPA Personal is also referred to as WPA Pre-Shared Key. Refer to the image below for an example.

To set up WPA Personal on a Linksys router, follow the steps below:

Step 1:
On Security Mode, select WPA Personal.

NOTE: If you are unable to find the WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal in the list of choices for the Security Mode then you might need to upgrade the firmware of your router to its latest version. Upgrading the firmware can fix the bugs of the previous version and update its other features.

Step 2:
Enter your Passphrase.

NOTE: The Passphrase must consist of at least eight characters and is case-sensitive.

How do I set up passwords


Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you need the secure the router you need to access the Wireless Settings Page.

To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key or Wep Key. The Network Key or Wep Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure.

If you forgot your password, we can actually access the router web ui.

Accessing the Router's Web-based Setup Page

Step 1: Open your web browser.

Step 2:Enter your router's IP address on the address bar and press the Enter key.
NOTE: The router's default IP address is http://192.168.1.1.
Step 3: The Enter Network Password window will then appear. Type your router's User name and Password. Click OK afterwards.

Web-based Setup Page Wireless Security Options

On the web-based setup page, you'll be able to see all of your router's wireless security features. Wireless settings wherein you can see your network name and once your click wireless security sub tab under wireless page you will then see your network key or password (passphrase).

I am trying to connect my laptop to my home computer and required to enter a "security key." How do I find the security key on my router?


well its simple to find the security of your router by logging into the web interface of your router...

first check what is the default gateway address of your router, then enter the address in the address bar of your browser...

you will be seeing the web interface of your router...

go to security options on the interface and find yourself what is the security key...

Lost password/unknown security key


Connect your laptop to router using ethernet cable open internet explorer & type 192.168.0.1 press enter it will take to login screen and if you havent changed the username and password for the router it should be admin as the username and password as password. once in the router you can change the network key to anything as desired by you.

How do I setup security on my belkin wireless router that has been installed already?


Hi,

Now when talking about security, it depends on which part you want to secure:
1- secure the access to the router web interface: you can change the default password. the default password is blank so there is no password which is not secure at all.
2. secure the wireless access: you can change the WEP or WPA key used, first you will need to access to the router web interface and go to wireless security and then change the key. an other option is to filter by MAC address, so only the MAC addresses put in the list will be able to connect via wifi.
3. secure the incoming traffic: the NAT is enabled by default in all routers, but you can also add some rules for the incoming traffic.
That's very much it when talking about security of a wireless router.
If you need help to secure your router, i can work with you directly on your router and do the job via a remote control software like teamviewer.

I got new laptop and i want to conect with wireles but is asking for security key which i dont know where to check to find it. How can i do it/


All Linksys routers have a built-in web-based setup page that allows the user to customize settings and set up advanced properties.
NOTE: Before accessing the router’s web-based setup page, make sure the router is powered on and the computer is wired to one of the Ethernet ports on the router (1, 2, 3 or 4 ).

Accessing the Router’s Web-Based Setup Page
Step 1:
Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer.
Step 2:
Go to the Address bar and enter your router’s IP address ("192.168.1.1" is the default IP of most Linksys routers) then press [Enter].
Step 3:
A new window will prompt for a User name and Password. Leave the User name field blank then enter your router’s password ("admin" is the default password), then click OK.

To setup or SEE the WPA Wireless Security on your Linksys router, follow the steps below:
Setting-Up the Wireless Router to Use WPA
Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, see above
Step 2:
When the router’s web-based, setup page appears, click Wireless and select Wireless Security.
Step 3:
Select WPA Personal under the Security Mode drop-down menu.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE JUST CHECKING ON THE PASSWORD NO NEED TO GO ON JUST TAKE NOTE OF THE WPA SHARED KEY AND USE IT IN YOUR LAPTOP WHEN ASKED OF THE PASSKEY
Step 4:
Select TKIP on WPA Algorithms.
Step 5:
Enter your desired WPA Key on the WPA Shared Key field such as “MySecretKey.” This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network.
NOTE: Do not give this key to anyone. This key will secure your wireless network. Leave Group Key Renewal to 3600 seconds

If the laptop was connecting wirelessly before and you didn't change the wireless security key on the router during your troubleshooting steps with the ISP then it should just reconnect. If it doesn't reconnect you should probably delete the wireless profile that's saved and try connecting again. When you delete the wireless profile you will have to enter the security key again. Make sure you have this information handy.

If you are uncertain what the wireless security key is use your desktop that is physically connected to the router to log into the router and reset the security key.

To log onto the router you need to know the routers IP Address. You can obtain that information through the following:

START MENU
RUN
Type CMD
Click OK
Type IPCONFIG
Hit Enter
Look for the default gateway. The default gateway is the IP Address of the router. By default the IP is 192.168.1.1.

Type whatever IP Address you discovered into the address bar of your web browser (Internet Explorer for most) and hit enter.

You will be prompted for a login. If you didn't change the default login information to the router it should be a blank username and the word: admin - as the password.

Navigate to the wireless settings and reset the security key.

From your laptop key in the new network key.

Security


Go to the router's web interface (192.168.1.1), in the wireless section go to Wireless Security. Enable WEP, you will create a WEP key for your wireless network, then that key will be asked to any wireless device that tries to use your wireless network.
