I had a similar problem .. black splotches. How much life does the menu system say the toner and drum have? How many pages has your printer printed (also in the menu).

My problem, I believe, is with the fuser.

Sounds like the high voltage necessary for depositing toner on the paper is acting up.

It has somes spots on the side of the sheets and I cleaned the cartriges and the spots isn't gone.

A print quality defect in which pages contain random spots or splotches (click on the link to see sample http://bit.ly/mRX3qz) may occur after the replacement of a supply item or the clearing of a paper jam. If your printed output resembles the example shown, please do the following:

Print the Menu Settings page to check the levels of your consumable supplies (i.e. items such as toner cartridges and photoconductor units). Supplies that are at or near the end of their functional lives can cause various print quality issues independently of the operation of the printer.

If any of your other supplies are low, replace them to see if this resolves the issue. Instructions for replacing supplies can be found in the User's Guide.

It is always advisable to print the Print Quality Pages to get a detailed look at your printer's output. These pages allow each color plane to be viewed independently to determine if the issue is with one color (possibly due to a single supply item), or with all the colors (indicating a more general issue with the printer).

If the above checks show that everything is normal, the print quality issue is probably a temporary situation which sometimes follows supply replacement or paper jam removal. Printing 5-10 additional pages should allow the issue to clear up on its own.

If the print quality issue does not clear on its own, please contact Lexmark Technical Support

I use a Dell 3110 cn printer. There were black splotches whenever I printed envelopes.I had a serviceman look at it to no avail so I changed the black toner cartridge. I am now getting blue splotches. ...

when you print envelopes you have to choose the envelopes in the printer settings then only machine knows that envelope is printing. when you don't select envelope in printer settings when you sent a print, the printer knows the a normal paper is coming through. the difference is that the envelope is a bit thick the normal paper. when envelope is selected in printer properties then the printer adjusts its settings to print on envelopes.

It prints the paper looking dirty with splotches...what's wrong and how can I fix that?

In my case the splotches were about 28mm apart which suggests a roller of about 9mm in diameter. Removed the photoconductor unit and there are two rollers, a big green one and a smaller grey one that's 9mm in diameter :) The small grey one had various black splotches that looked like moisture but were toner deposits that were printing onto the page. Wiped the roller clean with a damp cloth and then wiped dry and problem solved.

Black splotches on paper when printing

either toner cartridge is leaking or the fuser is bad and starting to hold extra toner- any chance of swapping toner cartridge or testing it with another printer (friends?)

The problem is: Black splotch on paper

if it is a laser multi function machine, there may be toner build up on the fuser roller. also, there maybe some other component malfunctioning. i.e., print cartridge (if it's one of those "all in one" type deals", toner and/or drum (if sold separately), place a service call

Colors off. saturation incorrect.

I've had similar color management problems.  I've lacked consistent color management from day one with this printer.  I use standard Epson ICC profiles for paper /printer combinations.  In setup I select the specific paper type (mostly Epson Premium Luster paper.  SP4800 PLPP PK 288.icc profile. I use Print with Preview, Color Handling "No Color Management".  Under Print Setup I select Premium LusterPhoto Paper. Under Printer Color Management I select Off (No color management).
Prints with these settings are so far off from the colors in the preview image the only thing they are good for is the shredder.  In addition, I can use the same profile and printer settins and prints are different from one print to the next without changing any settings. Very frustrating.

I've gone through several hundred dollars trying to get consistent color management.  I also use an Eye One Greytag Mcbeth color management tool for both monitor, and for some papers, custom profiling.  Nothing seems to improve.
I did talk with a consultant and was advised to do a good head cleaning (which was done) and also use Disk Utility to repair permissions (also done) but still no improvement. My consultant from a reputable Pro Photo source advised me that I was not alone and that he ad numerous users who were experiencing similar color management problems.  This vendor no longer carries Epson because of  these continuing problems. Try the head cleaning and repairing permissions.  As for me, I've been struggling twith these problems for over a year.  I'm looing at trading in my Epson 4800 for an HPZ3100. This is probably overkill for my needs as it is 24 inch capacity but i like that it has an Euye One photo sensitometer built into the print heads.  I'll be going to the vendor and testing this unit later this week.
