Acer 3690 My daughters Acer has been having problems charging with the power jack. I have to wiggle the cord to get the charging light to turn green. Finally now it wont charge it at all and I cant even power on the laptop. Any ideas? Maybe just a bad power cord?

It's probably just the power cord. I had the same problem, I bought a replacement power cord from ebay and everything works fine now.

Once you get the pin repaired be sure and use some sort of cable stay or restraint so it doesn't happen again. . .

Here's something I recommend. . .

Take a pen or small screwdriver and try and move the charging pin on the laptop. It is very common that the pin itself becomes loose. It should be nice and tight with no play. If tapping it with a pen causes any kind of loose movement, it means that your pin has lost it's connection inside. If this is the case you will need to have it serviced. Hopefully there is still warranty on the unit. If not you will probably be looking at about $200 to get it fixed as the entire laptop would need to be taken apart and the pin resoldiered or replaced.

Let me know if this helped.

It could be the cord, if it is frequently bent right at the connector the wires inside can be broken. You can obtain a replacement plug that can be soldered onto the wires from RadioShack. you'll need to cut the old plug off, about an inch from the connector to make sure you eliminate the bad part of the wire. You must be sure to get the polarity of the plug correct or you can damage the PC or the battery. The power pack may have a diagram with the polarity.

It could also be the power jack on the PC itself. With frequent use the jack solder joints could have cracked and are no longer making a connection. They can be re-soldered to correct the problem, but it is a tedious task to take it apart to get to it.

If you have a MultiMeter, Analog or Digital (DMM) you can use it to test the power pack for output, as well as use it to determine the polarity. With the meter connected you can bend the wire to see if it breaks the power connection, if it does you just need to replace the plug.

Hope this helps :)

Asus UL50VT always shows charging

Either your battery or the power cord has an issue. Does the battery ever fully charge and make the charging light disappear or turn green? If not the battery could be bad.

Try running the computer off the battery by removing the power cord. if the battery starts losing charging strength real quick then your battery is bad. I've see bad batteries that say they are 100% charged but as soon as you remove the power cord it gets down to 5% i a matter of minutes.

Try running the computer on just the power cord. If it stays on and lets you operate without any problem then the power cord is good. A good power cord will not charge a bad battery.

If the laptop does not let you stay on long with the power cord, then either the power cord is bad or the DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the laptop is bad. If either of them is bad they will not charge a good battery.

Check your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

My Acer Aspire 5630 laptop will not charge all the time, even though the charger is plugged into it with the green light indicating its working. Its charges every so often, then stop, and my computer shuts...

Hello.
The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem. The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.
If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Another suggestion is to remove the heatsink and apply new thermal paste or the motherboard may need replacing. Leave it to an expert if you are not familiar.

Hope this helps.

I have ac adapter plugged into the wall, and into the computer, the charge pack light is green, the battery is in the computer and the computer won't turn on at all

You probably have a bad or loose DC jack on the laptop:

Problem symptoms:

  1. Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  2. Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wiggle the power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  3. The battery will not get charged.
  4. When you plug AC adapter, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).

I plug my ac adapter in my laptop usually when you charge it turns the battery light in red then after few seconds turns to green! do you think the charge is not working?

Hello my friend this looks like a battery problem or a bad connection between DC-IN power jack on the system board, first try to wiggle the power cord and if power LED and battery charge LED start flickering then is the DC-IN power jack`s problem ,if its not is battery problem and you should change the battery
I'm waiting for your response
Good luck my friend:)

Acer 5050 laptop no power

I have the same thought.
But please check the new power adaptor has the same output voltage as the old one.
If same the power supply unit needs to be changed on the laptop.

All the best!

You still need to test the AC cord better.. Wiggling it in different areas to see if there is a break in the wires.... That is why i said watch for the Power light (when I say Power Light, not the one on the ac adapter cord... the power light on your laptop...)to see if it flickers or turns off at any point while you're testing the cord... If you have a Solid Lighted Power Light the whole time youre testing the AC cord (bending & wiggling it) then it is probably not the cord itself and i would then lean towards the DC jack...

Battery will not charge

The three likeliest candidates are battery, A/C adaptor and laptop power socket. Battery ? Batteries typically last between 1.5 to 4 years, depending on design and use. They are not safely repairable by users or most computer shops despite what you may read. If you remove the battery from the laptop and can run just off the A/C adaptor then the battery is probably the cause. The next test would be to use the battery in another laptop to see if the same problem occurs there. If it does then the battery is defective and needs to be replaced. If the battery does work then it?s likely the charging circuitry in the laptop itself is defective. A/C adaptor - Even though the green LED on the adaptor is on it can still be the cause of your problem. Inspect the cord, especially the jack that plugs into the laptop. The jack typically takes a lot of abuse and it?s common for the cord to be damaged at the base of the laptop jack itself. Often the damage isn?t visible; however, wiggling the wire at the base of the jack can cause the laptop charging LED to come on and off. The only way to truly test the adaptor is to measure the voltage coming out of the jack under a load. The last part is very important; simply measuring the voltage with a meter does not accurately test the adaptor. An easier alternative if you have the option is plugging a working adaptor into your laptop. Laptop power socket - Most times when the power socket in the laptop goes it?s due to a broken solder joint or a broken socket. Inserting the A/C adaptor jack in the socket and wiggling it back and forth can often cause the charging LED on the laptop to turn on and off. If that happens then the socket or the board it connects to needs to be replaced. That requires a major disassembly and is usually beyond the typical user.
