KP 57WS500 - Fixed 1 problem have another

I just picked up this tv for next to nothing. It had red/blue and green curved lines throughout the picture. I find the guide online to fix that problem and it took me 10 minutes or so. But - before I fixed that problem I could get about 3 hours outta the tv before it flashed and turned off giving me error code 8. Now after fixing the lines I tend to get about 1-5 minutes out of it and then it turns off.

Is there something simple that I am missing that will fix my problem and keep my tv working or do I really need to change the fly-back or d board? If so does anyone have a website with a good price on these?

I just can't help but think that there is some simple tweak to fix this. Was working for 3 hours yesterday and now 3 minutes ..

Please help!

First and foremost, please remember that TVs have and store very high voltage even when it is unplugged. If you are not an expert on TV repair, then don't risk fixing them as I describe below. You will die if you ignore my warnings. Have a good pair of rubber gloves, rubber sole shoes and a solid understanding of how high voltage is stored in TVs through their flybacks and hV splitter blocks.

The flashing 8 times code is not always the FB transformer. I just replaced the HV Splitter on my 46wt500 and it fixed the problem. After replacing the high voltage splitter and resetting the code errors in the service menu, my TV no longer has an 8 blink error code problem.

Before replacing the HV splitter though, make sure all the big red spark plug looking wires are securely pressed in on all sides. A loose connection can cause problems too. Make sure the very long red wire from the transformer to the RGB dials in the front of the TV is also secure on both sides. If all is secure and the 8 blink code still exists, then replace the splitter. Part number is 8-598-955-32. PN 8-598-955-31 will also work fine.

Now, on to the convergence problem of replacing the convergence chips and the pico fuses on the G board. After that, it will be good as new. BTW, a low voltage B 6 blink code is replated to the convergence amps and pico fuses being blown.

Don't forget to clear the codes in the Service menu after all repairs. To see the error codes, Use the Original remote with the TV off, but plugged in, press in sequence, "Display, 5, Vol -, Power". This will display error code history. To clear, turn the TV off and press in sequence, "Display, 5, Vol +, Power" Once the appears, press 8, then enter. The TV will power down and turn back on with a full reset. From here, you can make your tweaks and then save them as the Service Manual indicates.

What exactly did you repair? Some fixes on line dont delve into the cause why the component failed. usually if a component fails just replacing that component wont fix the set unless you diagnose what caused that item to fail. Let me know what you fixed and I should be able to help you out with the problem.

Okay I followed the link. That proceedure only turns down the voltage to the guns. Which will definately take away the lines, However it can also cause the CRTs to go into whats known as blanking which will shutdown the TV for safety . The 8 blinks that you were getting was the code that indicates that the flyback is defective the flyback provides the voltage to light the guns in the tubes. (reason for the lines in all 3 tubes) You will need to replace the FBT transformer (flyback) on the D board then adjust the g2 controls back where they were origionally, and your set should work again. Heres the part number for the FBT tarnsformer 1-453-285-41 FBT ASSY abd its available at the following link for 112.00

Re-insering the flyback wire is usually very easy. Push in and give a slght turn and check to see if grabbed. It sounds as if there is more issues than flyback wire. TV should turn on without one crt connected

Sony KP-51WS500 projection tv. Screen is green with curved lines

The green picture tube has an internal short. Happened a lot with that model. The tubes are no longer availible. But a reputable company called Video Display will rebuild the tube completely. But the tube must be pulled and shipped to them. Most repair shops would charge around $400 to $500 for the complete job.

Do either the red or the green crts come up at all?? If not the heaters in the blue crt could be bad - loading down the HV and the shutdown circuit turns the set off.. Only repair for that is to replace the blue crt, but I would have it tested first.. In the shop here we use a B&K467 to test for shorts and emission leaks but that's old school.. B&K has since come out with far superior crt tester/rejuvenators..

Sony KP-57WS500 57 in. Rear Projection Television

Hi Guys

Your problem here has to do with the amount of aging that happens to the three colour tubes - red, green and blue.

Blue actually ages slower than red and green. What actually happens is the green tube deteriorates and due to green being the predominant colour for brightness causes the blue tube`s flyback lines to appear - especially when switching between inputs or when the video is blanked.

No replacing the blue tube will not solve your problem as the tube is actually the best one of the three.

As someone mentioned there is a way to adjust this by removing the speaker grill assembly in front of the set. Doing the service mode adjustment with the remote is not the right way to solve the problem - you would be adjusting the colour gain and off-set values and would seriously be compromising the white balance of the set.

On the left hand side behind the speaker cover you will see a black square block with six adjustment points. Look for the one marked SCR BLUE, Switch the set to a unused input so the blue lines become visible. Now adjust the BLUE point counter clockwise until the lines disappear. A small adjustment should do it, Switch back to a picture and make sure the whites are still white.

This should sort your problem. I would however suggest asking a Sony service centre to do this for you. This is a dangerous thing to do as you will be working close to the 35Kv supply the the anodes of the three tubes.

I hope this answers your question.

Goo luck.

Sounds like a conergence circuit failure, probably a couple of AMPs and a few discreet components. Probably 250-300 repair

KP-57WS500 57 in Sony Rear Projection

I had the same problem with my sony KP-57ws500 rear projection tv and thanks to the thread I fixed it in 10 minutes. At first I thought it was a white curved line but then after a closer look it was a very light green curved line. To solve this problem all you need is a flat and phillips screwdriver. Right below your speakers on the right and left side are tabs. Pull out the tabs and remove the screw on eachside. Once that is done remove the speaker cover. The two screws at the bottom are the only screws and you just have to wiggle the facing off by pulling out and down. You will see a fiber board cover in the middle of the tv, there will most likley be twist ties holding some wires, to make it easier to work remove the ties. Now remove the screws on the fiber board and pull it off.

You should see 6 adjustments screws. on the top for is focus, do not touch those.
Below the focus adjustments are the Red, Green, and Blue. The adjustment is slight so turn the correct color slowly and don't push hard on the screw. I had to turn the green to the left to get the lines to disappear and it was only about a 1/32 of a turn. Very very slight. Good Luck.
