Question about Magellan eXplorist 500 GPS Receiver
When I turn on unit, I get a message that unit contains no map!
Also, Initiating map upload
Sounds more like a firmware update is the issue. happens with those Magellans all the time. go to the site, and check for updates, before doing anything else.

The necessary map software is not installed - did you buy the unit with software?
