bad cartridges or you set it not to remind you of ink running low
If so maybe try to remove the head and let it cap.
Unplug it for 30 minutes and re-install head etc.

Ink cartrige problem i replaced both cartriges keeps saying right cartrige is incorrect wont let me print

Wiping the nozzles with a moistened soft cloth or removing and reinserting the cartridges usually helps. The cartridges for the Lexmark X7170 are black: 32/34 and color: 33/35. If these are the cartridges that you purchased and even tried your old and new cartridges yet the problem persists, please don't hesitate to contact Lexmark technical support.

Some menus on the X8310 and X8350 are repeated in the Copy Mode, Scan Mode, Fax Mode and Photo Card menus.
If you press the Menu button while in any of the above menus, two ancillary menus will be listed, Maintenance and Device Defaults.
To select either of these menus, press the check mark pattlnk_442006_155-selects.gif at the center of the navigation keys on the printer.

Device Defaults Menu options Set Date and Time Language Country Copy Paper Photo Paper Photo Size Button Beep Power Save Timeout Caller ID Pattern

The ink levels should reset when the ink jet cartridge is installed

Another thing which is mentioned at their support site is quote:
If you have refilled the cartridges you got along with the printer, you can't reset them. 23 and 24 are not meant to be refilled. They are what Lexmark call "return program cartridges"- they can't be refilled, you can send them back to Lexmark ( that's why they are called "return cartridges"). You need to buy either 23A and 24A or 34 and 35, those cartridges are refillable.
Here is a link to Lexmark, with a list of cartridge compatibility for your printer:

My black cartridge was empty so I bought a new one. When I inserted the cartridge...the screen read "Remove and Check Cartridges." The "Copy", "Scan", and "Photo Card" tabs keep blinking as well....

hawleydn,
I know this might sound crazy, but your brand new cartridge is junk. Take it back and get a new one. I've done this several times with my HP PSC 2210. the all-in-ones are sometimes finicky with the cartridges. Also, be careful when you insert it into the slot. There is a small wire clip thing on the right side that is easily broken if you try to force it in.

If this helps, give me a vote :o)

Replacing Ink Cartridges

http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/2007/6200/winug/en/frameset.html

Note: Make sure the All-In-One is on.
  1. Lift the scanner unit. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position. sscano.jpg
  2. Press down on the cartridge lever to raise the cartridge lid. scrtrpc1.jpg
  3. Remove the old cartridge. Dispose of empty ink cartridges (see Recycling Lexmark products). Use the cartridge storage unit that came with your photo cartridge to store partially used cartridges for future use. See Using the cartridge storage area. scrtrpc2.jpg
Note: If you are removing both cartridges, repeat steps 2 and 3 for the second cartridge.
Installing the print cartridges Note: If you are installing a photo print cartridge, remove it from the print cartridge storage unit. Place the empty print cartridge storage unit in the cartridge storage area. For help, see Using the cartridge storage area.

  1. If you are installing new cartridges, remove the sticker and transparent tape from the back and bottom of the cartridges. staperem.jpg
Warning: Do not touch the copper contact area on the back or the metal nozzles on the bottom of the cartridges.
  1. Unless they are already open, press down on the cartridge levers to raise the cartridge lids. sctnin2.jpg
  2. Insert the black cartridge or the photo cartridge in the left carrier. Insert the color cartridge in the right carrier. sctnin3.jpg
  3. Snap the lids closed. sctnin4.jpg
  4. Close the scanner unit. sscanc.jpg
Note: The control panel display will prompt you to print an alignment page.
Note: The scanner unit must be closed to start a new scan, print, copy, or fax job

Remove and Check Cartridges

Hiya timcarter1... Clear tray of any paper...would suggest you are ceratin that the cartridges are engaged! Otherwise try doing a reinstall of your software... and are you using generic cartridges " copy" rather than the branded ones .. tends to result in same message!
