You should take it to a vacuum repair shop. You are most likely not going to be able to repair the rewinder yourself and may get a nasty surprise if the spring pops out in your face. Access is with 4 screws ( depending on the model ) ; 2 under the bag housing lid, and the other 2 at the rear corners , under the rewind pedal or inside the power tool caddy.

The power cord does not retract or rewind when the button is pushed. How can I repair this?

Sometimes you can help get the springs working again, by gently pulling the cord out a little further and then let it slowly in while pushing the cord retract button.

My Miele S548 does not turn on. I am suspecting power cord contact inside. I am pretty good at disassembling electrical equipments including TVs and laptops. Not being able to open the vacumm canister...

heya,

your exactly right. there is probably 2 or 3 screws your missing there.

now getting to these screws is easy. If you haven't already, remove the top filter and the bag door lid.

Assuming you have taken the screw out holding the black control panel out already... you want to remove the black panel with your on/off switch and the cord rewind. Once you have the panel off there are a couple of screws there that are holding you back. once removed, you should have full access to the underneath with the motor and cord rewinder there.

Good luck,
Mark

Power cord caught in rewinder, Sears bagged canister. 10 yrs old

Hi There,

I'm sorry, I didn't get your comment on your previous repair. In order to get the cord reel out of the canister, here's what you'll need to do:

I have uploaded2_bing.gif a parts diagram of your model below so that you can follow along:

7dbc7c2.jpg

Step 1. Open up the tool lid as if you were going to remove the dusting brush or crevice tool from the top of the vacuum2_bing.gif. Once the lid for the tools is open, simply grab the two arms at the base of the lid, and pull forward towards the front of the vacuum where the bag connects. You'll need to remove the tool lid completely from the rest of the vacuum. You may have to lift slightly upwards while pulling forwards to remove the lid.

Step 2. After you've removed the tool lid, now open up the lower part of the tool lid that covers the vacuum bag (Part 29 in diagram above). While this cover is open all the way, grab the two arms on this part as well, and pull towards the front of the vacuum where the bag connects, and slightly upwards, just as you did to remove the tool lid. Remove the vacuum bag lid completely from the vacuum cleaner2_bing.gif as well.

Step 3. There are two visible screws that are now visible (The screw listed as number 16 that's directly underneath of the number 36) on the front corners of the motor housing. Remove both of these screws that are in the front corners of the motor housing.

Step 4. There are actually two more screws that are hidden on this model, that are located underneath of the foot pedal that retracts the cord reel. You'll need to now remove the foot pedal from the vacuum cleaner (part 36 on the diagram). In order to do this, use a flat head screw driver to pry off the foot pedal. Insert the flat head screw driver in the front of the pedal where the pedal meets the motor housing. There are 4 tabs that hold this pedal in place. Usually if you put your flat head screw driver in the middle of the pedal where two of these tabs are right next to each other, the pedal will come off right away. Insert your flat head screw driver where I have circled red, these are the two tabs that you want to pry off. Simply push towards the rear of the vacuum while the flat head screwdriver is inserted in between the foot pedal and the motor housing:

Step 4. Now that you have the foot pedal off of the canister, simply remove the two now exposed hidden screws (oh yea watch out for that spring that's underneath of the pedal! remember to put this back when putting the pedal back), and lift straight up on the motor housing. You'll now have full access to the cord reel so that you may push the cord back through the hole in the rear of the vacuum cleaner.

Please feel free to use the Clarification Request form here on the repair page if you have any questions, or need some further help in accessing the cord reel. Also have a Kenmore Model 116. Power retractor not holding cord

The cord winder on these is spring loaded and has cog which is meant to lock with every full rotation of the spool the cord winds onto. It is tricky to work on.
Try pulling a bit more slowly and see if the rewind will stop.
The back housing on top of the vac needs to be removed to access the rewind. The housing snaps into place at the back corners, generally must be carefully pried and popped off by someone familiar with the vac. Some models may also have 2 screws under the lid in the bag area.

There are four screws, two at the front and two at the back under the step bar that rewinds the cord.  It lifts off from the bottom.  Be careful not to snap off the tabs.

Power cord won't retract on anaerus 5500 vacuum cleaner

What you can do is take out the six hex screws on the bottom of the machine while on it's back. When all the screws are out, flip the machine back over, making sure you don't lose any of the screws. From there, open the bag cover and leave it open. Remove the cord release button. (The big rectangular button near the rear of the machine. Usually a firm pull up will get that thing out without incident.) Grasp the handle with one hand and hold the machine steady with the other. With a firm pull, pull upwards. This should seperate the chassis from the main cover.

With the machine guts exposed, place the main cover on the side for now. Now, this next part you can do one of two ways. You can either leave the cordwinder wires attached, (there's only 2 connected wires to the cordwinder, the white and black. Black is on the inside prong while the white is on the outside) or you can take the wires off. I find it easier to disconnect the wires.

Now, remove the cordwinder from it's place, making sure you take note of how the cordwinder rests in the groove from the motor. From there you can rewind your cord fully. Once this is complete, continue winding the cord while holding the cord in place. Take note of the spring. Make sure you are winding in the direction that is TIGHTENING the spring. Make sure you don't overtighten as the center plastic piece will surely snap due to the overtension. This may take a few tries, but be patient. Once you have met your estimated tension needed, replace the cordwinder, put the cover back on WITHOUT SCREWING IT BACK IN PLACE and replace the cord rewind button.

Replace the large cord release button and pull your cord out at least halfway. Hit your Cord rewind button. If your cord rewinds fully, congratulations, you got it in one try. Replace the screws and you are finished. If not, re-open the machine and continue rewinding the cord in the direction that TIGHTENS the spring with emphasis on overtightening. Once you break that center plastic prong, you need to buy a new cordwinder, so emphasize patience. If you're getting frustrated, go take a break and come back. Repeat until the cord winds fully, replace all the screws and you are finished.

I figured it out ..by pushing the lever down and pry a screw driver into three different spots on the top, to release the rewind bar. Looks like three little j hooks hold it down. It took a flashlight and night time for me to see it.

Most of these you have to take off the cover on the back end where the cover retrack button is. Usually it has a catch, 2 on each side, use a screw driver, pry up near each corner to release it, then you can get to the cover over the moter and cord reel. Remove the 2 screw and put up and out.

Pwr cord rewind reel

You have to pop the grey button off for the cord rewind. There is one more screw under there. You have to be very careful, because you can break one of the tabs that hold the button on. In fact, it is almost a garuntee. There are three tabs that stick off the button that hold it in place on the orange hood. There's a long tab about 3/4 inch long on the inside corner of the button you need to be careful of. Good luck!
