There's a little blue toggle switch where the copies/scans come out from.
Pull the blue switch toward you, turn off the printer, wait a few seconds, and turn the printer back on.

Readoout says

1. Turn machine OFF and unplug electrical cord from wall or power strip.
2. Turn ON printer without the power cord plugged in (this will discharge the power capaciter in the printer).
3. Plug electrical power back in and turn on printer...
4. It should have reset.

Another possibility:
The scanner arm has the physical "lock" switch in the locked possition. Turn OFF printer and move the switch to the unlock position. Turn on printer.
This switch is for whenever the printer is moved to a different location and will protect the scanning bar.

Hope this helps!

Samsung CLX 3170 scanner locked

Many scanners contain a scanning head lock to keep the scanning head from moving during shipping. This may still be still be in the lock position. All scanners are different but check the documentation on how to remove the head lock.

Scanner Imaging problem

Your scanner’s lock switch may be locking up the carriage unit. Depending on the model you own, your scanner’s lock switch resides in one of two locations. You can find it beneath the scanner itself or in a corner next to the scanner bed after you lift the lid. The switch should be marked with a locked and unlocked padlock symbol; slide the switch to the unlocked padlock to unlock the carriage unit.
It’s also possible that the supplied USB cable is improperly connected to your computer. Connect the cable directly to your PC. Canon’s online documentation indicates that scanners that connect via a USB hub may not work properly. Once you have unlocked your scanner and properly connected it directly to your computer, try to rescan the image.

Error Message

The scanner lock is used to keep the printer from being damaged when it is being shipped. To unlock it, just open the printer and push the scanner lock down. When you lift up the scanner unit, (like what you do to get to the cartridges) the scanner lock is on the left of the underside of the scanner unit. You can get the manual from the Lexmark Website at http://www.lexmark.com/publications/eng/x6100/index.html

Scanner Locked

On the underside of the scanner assembly is a LOCK, it has two positions LOCK and UNLOCK. The manufacturer sets it to lock so the scanner doesn't move during shipment. You should be able to slide this to the unlock position.

Scanner lock is on

Do you not have a manual or 'get you started sheet?' It is the first thing you do when unpacking a scanner is to unlock the shipping lock. In all probability it is under the scanner base so if it is a lifting item[to access the printer] check there,or on the backplate of the scanner where all the sockets are. Failing that get onto the Tech support site at Canon.
