Question about Toshiba TDP-S8 Multimedia Projector

TDP-S8 Did you find the problem with your projector? Mine is having the same problem with powering up, then shutting down after about 5 seconds, blinking yellow light, and that's it. Thanks. billgrove@gmail.com Bill

How do you reset the lamp timer

  • hnkurtiz Jan 29, 2009

Unbelievable! This has been going for a while at my house too. We find that if we dont use the projector for a few days it will turn back on but then once you turn it off you can't start it back for a few days. I don't want a every-other-day projector, I want one I can use when I want to use it. Guess we have to buy a new one!

I've had a similar issue, but where 2 of the caps on the main board fell off!! I've put them back on but still to no avail, i'll try your method of replacing that cap, but if that fails, would you mind sending the service-manual through to me, steve at bhr2.za.net. I'm a student and a bit poor. Thanks.

The main problem is the power supply. In detail, the output capacitor of the power supply causes the problem. I guess, Toshiba or Lite ON didn't consider the aging effect of the output capacitor. You should replace the output capacitor to fix the problem. (In some sites, they recommend to replace the power supply, but don't do that. The new power supply costs over $200 and the capacitor will be less than 50cents.) If you disassemble TDP-S8, in the power supply, you can find the electrolytic capacitor 3300uF/10V. You should replace this with any electrolytic capacitor with the range of 2000uF~4000uF/10~16V. You can download the service manual from some websites (I've paid $5 for this) then you can disassemble the projector. Of course, you need to do soldering to replace the capacitor. I've fixed this problem yesterday and it took about 4 hours for me. Good Luck~~!!

Fixed! Its a very delicate operation but I replaced the capacitor as described. Don't forget to put back the lamp door cover, it toggles a switch that enables the power supply. It took me a while to figure out why the fix was not working and the darn door was the reason!
Some more info: This power supply generates 3.3, 5, and 13V plus a high voltage of 350V. Other than the lamp-cover-switch the power is always on and could be replaced by an external supply if you cannot fix any of the 4 voltages.
BTW, this made me look at other electronics that have not been working. All my blown UPSs have blown capacitors!! All my blown computer power supplies also have blown capacitors!! This is a big problem.

Infocus IN10 projector, when I turn it on the light blinks green for a while (with no picture) and then it shuts off and blinks red (more than 5 blinks)

if Lamp or projector shuts off after running a short period of time, This is usually a thermal issue caused by excessively
high internal temperature. The high temperature
could cause a component on the controller ECA or
the power supply to fail when it gets hot.
First you need to check the fan operation, Are 3 fans, two for lamp and one for the color wheel. Check the elevation foot, if something is broke maybe something stop the fan.
Remove the lamp module.
Examine the fan assembly through the recess in the bottom case. Plug the projector in and turn it
on. Both fans in the fan assembly should start up and run for 5 - 10 seconds, then shut down
(because there is no lamp installed). This is time enough to make sure the fans work properly.
Make the same for the color wheel fan, you need to remove the top case.

Is the projector receiving a source signal? if not it will power itself down after whatever time you have it set to do so when no signal is present.

Check the color wheel if it is not turning when you hit the power button (light should flash) you have 1 or 2 loose caps on the bottom of the main board behind the audio input try to resolder them with low heat iron these are smt caps and very hard work on if you have not worked on this kind of job take it to a expert
good luck! ps make sure you glue them down
if you do get them to work to prevent a reocurance.
OR you have a power supply issue which
should be a swolen 3300 mf 10 volt cap
in the main power supply.

The projector comes on, lights up but then shuts off after 30 seconds

My TDP-T9 had the same symptoms. A 3300uF 10V electrolytic cap in the power supply (Liteon) unit was domed up, so I replaced it with a high-spec 2200uF 16V cap costing three dollars. The re-flow solder on the board was damn hard to melt though, needed 400°C setting on the soldering iron.
