Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC
I am a grieving mother trying to recover 13 year old son's personal data files. He wanted to be a rock star and he has songs and music recording saved on his computer. My son recently died 4 weeks ago and he never told anyone his password to his computer. I have tried everything. I even bought some software called password genuis that did not work or reset the passcode. his computer is an e-machine model t3616 vista home basic
Remove the hard drive and install it as either an external drive (USB) or internal as slave on another pc. from there, you can see all the files. Only the op system is passwordized; even if there is a BIOS password, this trick should still work.

If this is WindowsXP, reboot the computer in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeated as the computer starts up. You will be presented with different "modes" to start windows in. Choose 'Safe Mode". Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes). You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrator's account and will be able to reset the lost password. Just click the administrator user account or any account, and then click Reset Password.

Some addition links found on Google
TestDisk is a powerful open-source tool for recovering your data.
Not only can TestDisk perform basic file recovery like undeleting accidentally deleted files from FAT, NTFS, and ext2 file systems, but it comes with a host of additional functionality.
With TestDisk you can recover your boot sector from a backup, rebuild your boot sector, fix FAT tables, fix your MFT, locate the ext2/ext3 backup SuperBlock, copy deleted files from partitions to recovery media, and find lost partitions in dozens of formats to help you locate your lost data.

It comes with a very intuitive interface which is suitable for all users.
It has recovered 1GB in 85 seconds and managed to recover all 106 files after the disk was formatted.
