Background on this machine can be caused by a variety of areas.
A bad high voltage power supply can cause this problem.
A bad developer housing can cause this problem as well.
When the developer housing is inserted, it has to connect to the blue plug correctly.
Sometimes the plug on the machine falls off, and the developer housing does not connect very good causing these types of problems.
A bad copy cartridge can cause these types of problems.
A copy cartridge reciever( the frame that holds the copy cartridge cracks and falls off, dangling, can cause copy quiality problems as these.
The mirror tabs that hold them in place can cause poor quaility problems.
A bad lamp can cause background problems even though the lamp does light and appears to be normal, a exposure lamp can cause these types of problems.
Good luck.

Tryit has it right. Btw, it is VERY IMPORTANT to be sure the copier is powered off and unplugged before working in the optics area. If you happen to lean against the start button while the optics is open and your fingers are in there you risk exposure to high voltage and possible injury from the moving carriages.

There are two other issues when cleaning your optics on this model. On the left hand side of the glass is the registration strip. (That's the green label where you line up your copies.) On the underside of that strip, there is a white strip that must be clean. When the machine sets up at power on, it uses this strip as a white level reference. (That's what is happening when the lamp comes on for a few seconds at power on.) You do not have to remove the registration strip to clean it. Just reach underneath the label while you have the glass off and clean its underside. The white strip runs the length, front-to-rear, of the registration strip. A lint-free cloth with an alcohol-based cleaner will work just fine.

The other possibility is a bigger problem. The clips holding the bottom mirror on the half-rate carriage (left most set of mirrors) will sometimes break. The mirror should not move at all. If it is wobbly, you will get some weird effects. That would probably require a service call.

Good luck

2 things primarily.
1 is dirty optics. Remove the glass, and the black optics tub. clean all the mirrors the lens and the lamp and the surrounding area around the lamp.
2. The copy cartridge may need replaced.

If the backgroung remains pretty consistant, it is most likely the optics.
If the backgroung get worse as the machine runs, or is different every other page, the problem is the copy cartridge.

I picked up a 5830 copier and a paper jam is in the LCD I followed the instruction, and there is no paper caught into the area per the displayed area or in the paper path period. Code is D3-1 Do you have a...

The machine has been sitting around for a while, or was just been stopped being used.
Try cleaning the brown roller in Tray 2.
Try the other paper trays see if they work. Tray 1 and tray 3.
We would need more information about the results of these areas and how it worked.
If there is alcohole, try cleaning the brown roller. The other rollers are harder to see. This machine could even have bad paper feed clutches.
A xerox serivce call would have to be placed to do the major repairs.

I have forget my user code

if it is a 5830 model, go to the menu and look for tools.
type "1111" and hit enter
sometimes it can be "11111" and see if it works.
I hope this is the area you wish to enter.
If it is the auditron mode, place a Xerox service call for the service rep.

LIGHT COPIES

You have to do what is called a "shading adjustment".
In order press "menu" #1934 on the machine, You will see a " T " displayed in the upper right side of your display. That means you are in the Tech mode. Some versions of software will also just say Tech.
Press the machine status button and then scroll to maintenance. Once there scroll to Adjust Shading, or Shading adjustment.
Place 5 pieces of clean white paper on the glass, 5 pages thick., not spread out, then close the cover and press start, it will ask you if you want to perform the adjustment , just press yes again. It will print out a page when done, that page displays across it, the pixils the the CCD in the scanner sees. If you notice it had some large deviations in it, the scanner will need cleaned. The numbers on that page will really mean nothing, Even if it says OK on the bottom does not mean the mirrors in the scanner are clean.

Rank xerox 5328 U9

if its a u9-1 code it is the lamp that is faulty. Sometimes it can be the connections either end of the lamp but normally the lamp itself. It will probably cost as much to fix as it would to get a new one to be honest

Xerox 5830 Poor print quality

The best place you can get a manual and parts from are here..

https://www.partsdrop.com/store/

Ask for Britt if you call. But I deal with them all the time.
I am sure they would have all you need.
No this is not where I work, I would not do that. But they are the most reliable parts place I have found.

Gray backround

Does your scanner software give the option to choose different modes...grayscale, color, black & white?? This sounds like it's scanning in grayscale....if you can change it to black & white, the background should remain white.
