Have a Gateway notebook, installed Vista Premium some time back on top of Vista that came with the notebook. Just tried to play a DVD and won't. The device manager identifies this unit a a CD-R only so obviously Windows screwed up the driver and now cannot read the recovery disk that came with the unit as it's a DVD!!!

Where can I get the driver? Gateway doesn't seem to help at all

I have seen this problem many times. 99% of the time this will fix it for you. The first part of this fix is to backup the current registry just in case you need to go back.

Try this. I really think it will fix your problem :)

1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. In the "Open" field type REGEDIT.
4. Click OK.
5. Click "File" in the menu bar.
6. Click "Export" from the drop down menu this will open a new box.
7. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select "Local Disk (C".
8. In the File Name field type BACKUP.REG.
9. Verify that under the “Export Range”, that the radio button is beside "All".
10. Click Save.
11. Click the plus sign (+) beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
12. Click the plus sign (+) beside System.
13. Click the plus sign (+) beside CurrentControlSet.
14. Click the plus sign (+) beside Control.
15. Click the plus sign (+) beside Class.
16. In the left hand window pane click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to select that key.
17. In the right hand window pane select the UpperFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard.
18. Confirm with an OK.
19. In the right hand window pane select the LowerFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard.
20. Confirm with an OK.
21. Click the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the Registry Editor window to close it.

Restart your Computer in order for the registry - fix to work.

Check BIOS for Optical drive. Press F key noted on boot screen to enter. If it's not noted there, you need to check physical connections. Might just need to be re-seated with power disconnected. Re-check BIOS and make sure to save before exiting.

If it is noted in BIOS and Windows still fails to see the drive. Run a thorough virus scan, then boot into Safe Mode by pressing F8 during startup. Go to Device Manager, and select Show Hidden devices under the View tab. Delete all drives and reboot. Windows should say new hardware found and install.

This should take care of the problem if there is nothing wrong with the drive. Replace or seek professional support is not, and good luck

My Optiarc DVD RW AD-7530A ATA Device will not recognize discs

This is a common problem and is caused by build up on the disc laser light, you can buy a cleaning disk for it that will clean the lazor light try that first ten if it won't read or even before your option go to windows update and update to the new media player, some of the new updates has stopped dvd players from working. Give thanks to RIAA for this one. And if that don't fix it go to start control panel right click on optical devices and right click on the dvd RW and remove the driver restart it Will detect it again and should ask if you want to look for a new driver for it if it does not look for it or does not detect the device then you have a hardware problem, a bad cable or a bad DVD burner.

The Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561A ATA won't work on hp pav dv6000

Windows uses generic simple drivers for any optical drives. Try deleting the drive from device manager and reboot. You do not need to download anything special for windows to operate a drive. If you cannot access the drive then it may be damaged or a hardware fault.
